Mr. William "Bill" Cosenza is a
perfect example of the fine
volunteer firemen in the Lyn-brook
Fire Dept. He is a member
of Engine Company No. 1 and
also a member of the busy and
active Rescue Squad to whom so
many of our residents are deeply
indebted for their rapid and ef-ficient
aid, and sometimes, their
very life.
Bill's father was one of the
founders of the Rescue Squad
over 42 years ago and he himself
is continuing in the fine tradition
of service to his neighbors and
community just as his father
before him. He has been a life-long
resident of Lynbrook and
although his father, also, William
passed away some years ago, his
mother Dorothy was active in the
Village Hall for many years until
her retirement, Bill was born in
St. Joseph's Hospital in Far
Rockaway and attended Marion
St. School and graduated from
Lynbrook High School and
Adelphi University with a major
in both English and Journalism.
He is the Publicity Chairman of
the Lynbrook Fire Dept., a post
he fills most effectively.
Bill is a social worker with
Nassau County Social Services
and is under Nassau County Civil
Service. He has been with the
Dept. of Social Services for over
14 years. He is a Supervisor of
children's placement and has to
make certain that he finds the
right foster family for different
children who need foster homes
and care.
He and his wife were special
friends in Lynbrook High School
and he married the petite and
attractive former Christine
Charvart in 1957. She is the
daughter of John and Margaret
Charvart of Stella Court and no
relation to another Charvart
family of Union Place who are
my good neighbors for so many
years and who also have a
daughter with the same name.
Bill and his lovely wife have six
fine children. They are Christine
age 13, Billy, age 12, Michael, age
11, Joseph, age 8, Cathy, age 6,
and their youngest, Carol, age 5
years of age.
Bill was a Classmate of Fire
Chief "Duke" Maffucci at
Lynbrook High School and they
graduated the same year. Bill is a
compact 5 ft. 6 inc. in height with
a slim build and a friendly and
kindly face and soft green eyes
and dark brown hair. He was the
Coach for many Athletic Teams
at Lynbrook High. Oddly enough,
red is his favorite color and he
probably associates this with the
Fire Dept. and excitement and is
rather disappointed as any true
fire buff would be at the new style
coming into the fire departments
all over the country in which it is
recommended that all fire trucks
and engines be painted bright
yellow. This is because there are
too many trucks and autos in
bright red right now and yellow is
more visible at night. He is the
first American we have ever
interviewed who preferred red
William Cosenza
whereas it is the favorite color of
almost all Oriental males who
regard it as a color of joy and
good luck.
His hobbies are fishing and his
duties with the Fire Dept. leave
him no time for much of nothing
else as he is both a member of
Engine Company and the Rescue
Squad and is on call at any
minutes of the day or night when
he is not at his regular job.
The Lynbrook Rescue Squad is
a unit within the Fire Dept. with
35 firemen trained in every phase
of First Aid and Rescue of all
kinds including bandaging,
splinting, resucitation etc. They
go through a rigorous training
period which makes them as
effective or more so then the
average ambulance attendants in
emergencies from the hospitals.
The 35 men work on and alternate
basis, operating both the Rescue
Truck and the Rescue Am-bulance
24 hours a day. Captain
Robert. "Bob" Gleason is the
captain in charge of this unit. This
year as well as last the estimated
rescue or first aid calls will total
around 700 calls from their
wonderful services.
One of the greatest thrills in
Bill's life was the day, the Rescue
Squad delivered a bouncing baby
boy on May 23rd of this year to a
Mrs. Glazer of Trafalgar Square.
Bill actually held the baby in his
hands as he came into the world
and passed him to his partners
who effiently finished up the
delivery job tending to the new-born's
needs. The wonderful
miracle of birth may be routine to
the average doctor or ob-stretician,
but as a layman. Bill
regards it as one of the most
memorable moments of his life.
The next most outstanding
event in his life to date was his
marriage to his beloved wife,
Catherine in 1957 at St.
Raymond's Church. They attend
Our Lady of Peace Church since
their marriage because that is
their parish according to their
residence. Bill and Catherine
were one of the very first couples
married at St. Raymond's
