John Richardson Michael was
bom in Qoversville, New York,
to Fay and Helena Michael, who
now reside in OneOnta, N.Y., he is
an only child. He remained in
GloversvUle until the 4th Grade,
when his father became the Asst.
Supt. ofthe Upstate Baptist Home,
the family was then moved to
Oneonta, N.Y,
Pastor Michael attended One-onta
High School taking part in
all athletics, he graduated in
1944.
He served in the United States
Navy in the Pacific Theatre of
War for two and one-half years,
on both a hospital ship and a re-pair
ship which saw much
service.
He first felt the call to serve
the Lord when he was still in
high school and feels that his
fine family background has a
great deal to do with his decision
to serve the Lord, Hisfatherwas
a Lay Minister and the family
were very devote and religious.
Upon his return from military
service he graduated from Provi-dence
Bible Institute in Rhode
Island. He was a class-mate of
both Pastor Howard Crist of
Hendrickson Ave. Bible Church
and Pastor Russell Christian of
The Old Church in Lynbrook,
He played on the basketball team
and later became coach of the
Bible Institute team.
He married the former May
Millar from Mass. in 1949. They
have a son, Mark AUen, age 17,
another son, David Scott, age 13,
and a daughter, Mary Beth, age
8. David Scott goes to Malveme
High School, and Mary Beth to
Davidson Ave, School, while Mark
goes to Huntington Christian
School, They are an affectionate,
close-knit family and do many
things together.
After P r o v i d e n c e , Pastor
Michael went to Wheaton College
in Illinois for two years, then
transferred from there to East-em
Nazarene College in Wollas-ton,
Mass. He e a r n e d his
Master's Degree in Religious
Education at S y r a c u s e Uni-versity,
After his graduation, he served
in his first post as Asst, Pastor
at The Central Baptist Church in
Springfield, HI, and later, he
served in the West Oneonta Bap-tist
Church as Pastor, and then,
in Immanuel Baptist Church in
Aubum, N,Y. as Pastor,
Five years ago, he came to the
Lynbrook Baptist Church as the
Pastor and leader of his con-gregation.
He is quite a handsome gentle-
Pastor John R. Michael
man, with a muscular sturdy
athletic build and a height of 5 ft.,
11 inc. with kindly eyes and dark
hair just turning to iron grey at
the temples. His Favorite color
is green and with a twinkle in
his eye he claimed that this was
because of the drop oflrishinhis
ancestry. His hobbies when he
can find the time are all types of
music and stamp collecting and
magic, which this interviewer
found quite intriguing.
The two most m e m o r a b le
events in his entire life are first,
his first conversion and dedica-tion
of himself to God, when he
was still in high school and felt
that the Lord had need of him and
secondly, his marriage to his
wonderful and devoted wife, May,
who he couldn't praise enough.
This year is his 20th Anniversary
Ordination and he is serving his
second term as President of the
New York State Conservative
Baptist Assoc,
Pastor Michael stressed the
great importance of an early re-ligious
training of the young for
every child and a good whole-some
family background.
He feels that as adults, we
often do not listen to young people
and we have to be willing to in-volve
ourselves with them and
their problems. On the other
hand, he feels that young people
must also realize tiieir own re-sponsibility
to themselves, their
family, their community and to
society and to each other,
I found Pastor Michael one of
the most sincere and interesting
religious leaders in Lynbrook and
a wonderful minister his people
are fortunate to have.
