Personalities
Annette Lltifr
Monselgnor Gerald Ryan, the
new Pastor of St. Raymond's
Church along with two sisters
is the last of seven children
bom to the late Cornelius and
Marion Ryan in Ridgewood,
Queens. He has one sister,
Mrs. James Hamilton, and
another, Mrs. Marion Reiney of
New York City.
He attended public schools in
Brooklyn and graduated from
Cathedral High School and then
graduated from The Immaculate
Conception Seminary in Hunting-ton
Long Island. He was or-dained
in June, 1950. He also
earned his M. A. Degree in
Psychiatric Social Welfare at
Fordham University. He has
been Director of Catholic Char-ities
for the RockvUle Centre
Diocese, Nassau County Mental
Health Board member, and a
member of the Nassau County
Youth Board.
His /first assignment was as
a parish priest in Wyandanch,
Long Island, and after that Sea-ford,
Long Island.
He pioneered the first Pre-
Cana Conferences for engaged
couples on marriage. The en-gaged
pair first have a session
under the skilled guiding hands
of a priest on Theology and
the basic doctrines of the Catho-lic
Church on marriage. The
second conference is held by
one or two skilled physicians
on physiolc^ and the last ses-sion
is held under the direction
of at least two married couples
who give practical advice on
various aspects of marriage.
He was in the Youth Division
of the C.Y.O. for 3 years and
was then later assigned to Family
Services for 6 years. Part
of his work involved building
a shelter for unmarried mothers
on Long Island. He often
counseled about 3,000 families,
one third of them seeking marital
counsel. Also, at that time,
under his direction, C.Y.O. had
the only Big Brothers Program
on Long Island. He found his
work as Director of Catholic'
Charities very rewarding as he
Is definitely the type of person,'
who always gives of himself very
unselfishly. He was appointed
Executive Director of Catholic
Charities and served in that
Capacity until his appointment
as P a s t o r of St. Raymond's
Church in, East Rockaway. St.
Raymond's serves over 3,000
families with only three priests
and Msgr. Ryan lauded the great
cooperation and dedicated work
of the people of his parish who
serve on the Parish School
Council, the Parish School Board
and in so many other ways which
make St. Raymond's one of the
best and l a r g e s t Catholic
churches in this entire area of
Long Island. Msgr, Ryan is
greatly impressed with the peo-ple
of his parish and deeply
moved by their whole-hearted
cooperation and contribution to
make their church and school
better whenever they can do so.
Msgr. Ryan is a tall 6 ft.
Mwvssl^nor Gvro/J Ryon
1 inch with a very rugged buUd
and a most kindly face and blue i.
eyes and silvery white hair with
a wave in it which would be
ftoe envy of most of us. He
is a truly modest man, and it
was difficult to get any informa-tion
about himself, particularly
because he loves people so much,
he never thinks of himself or
his rather remarkable achieve-ments
to date in ilie priesthood.
He likes music, light classics,
Bach and church compositions.
The new Folk Masses such as
those led by young John Chang
on his guitar, he finds very
good because they are primarily
for Youth.
Msgr. has a lively and typical
Irish sense of humor and a great
and true compassion for people
and their troubles. Both by
his excellent training and vast
experience he finds that he is
usually able to help with their
problems and is always ready
to listen. The ability to listen
to others and to really hear
what they have to say often comes
from the heart and Msgr. Ryan
is one clergyman who possesses
this quality. He wears glasses
and has a ready smile and genial
manner that puts one at ease.
He said his First Mass in
Nativity Church in Ozone Park.
He is a member of the Suffolk
County Mental Health Board and
is a Chaqplain of the Nassau
County Police Dept. He had
just returned from a quick visit
to Maine where he was invited
to attend The Annual Meeting
for Catholic Charities with many
people from all over that state
as a leading East Coast expert
and was impressed at the great
numbers of people who attended
the Conference there.
Two episodes in his life stand
out in his memory as truly
memorable in his esqierience.
He said Mass at the Church
of the Holy Sepulchre near Cal-vary
in Jeruselum and went to
retrace the path of Jesus through
the Holy Land and felt very
deeply moved when he was there
