At a Special Meeting of the
Lynbrook Chamber of Com-merce,
Inc. held at the Lynbrook
Elk's Club, Sept, 9, 1970 more
then 90 businessmen gathered
to discuss the problem of taxes,
especially, the re-assessment of
by: Annette Ling
property on MerrickRd. and Sun-rise
Highway. Chamber Presi-dent
Murray Levitt welcomed all
those present and stated that
since the Chamber was the
voice of business here In Lyn-brook
It had been requested to

I FRANCIS X. BECKER, Mayor of The Incorporated
Village of Lynbrook, do hereby proclaim the period
beginning September 17th and ending September
23rd, 1970 as Constitution Week, and direct the
appropriate municipal officials of The Incorporated
Village of Lynbrook to display the flag of the United
States on all municipal buildings on Citizenship
Day, September 17, 1970; and urge all religious,
civic, educational and other interested or-ganizations
to make arrangements for meaningful
observances on that day to further inspire all our
citizens to rededicate themselves to the service
of their Country and to the support and defense
of the Constitution.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my
hand and affixed the Seal of The Incorporated
Village of Lynbrook, this fourteenth day of Septem-ber
in the Year of Our Lord, One Thousand Nine
Hundred Seventy.
Francis X. Becker
Mayor
hold this special meeting on the
problems of re-assessment and
higher taxes which have oc-curred
on Merrick Rd. and Sun-rise
Highway.
Mr. Harold Reese of Reese
Bros, on Sunrise Highway, next
addressed the meeting and spoke
about unfair taxation causing the
American Revolution in our his-tory
and a recent taxpayers re-volt
in Isllp. He elaborated on
this theme and then quoted ex-cerpts
from Mayor Francis
Becker's writings and speeches.
The gist of the whole problem on
Merrick Rd, and Sunrise Highway
as he brought it out is that the
property owners on these two
main streets of the village went
through the re-evaluation and as-sessment
as did the entire Vil-lage
of Lynbrook when the Re-
Assessments were made by Eval-uation
Assoc, of Connecticut and
at that time had about a 50% tax
rise. This past June, many of
them thought there was some
mistake in their tax bills because
it was noted that the bills had
an increase of from 200 to 300%
in evaluation of the property.
Trustee Bill Buzzeo explained
some points of interest until the
arrival of Mayor Francis Becker
who next addressed the meeting.
Mr. Werner Amelingmeier,
Vice-President of the Chamber
had replied to Mr, Buzzeo by stat-ing
that increases to one part
Personalities
Annette Ling
Officer Daniel Carrano of the
Lynbrook Police IDept. is the
President of the Patrolmens'
Benevolent Society.
He was bom to Thomas and
Julia Carrano in Greenpoint,
Brooklyn. Dan has three sisters,
Mrs. Anna Capobianco, Mrs.
Mary Spinelli, both of Lynbrook,
and Mrs. Rose Theiling from
Valley Stream and three brothers
as well. His brothers are Louis
Carrano, Carmine Carrano, and
Thomas Carrano all local resi-dents.
He attended public school in
Brooklyn and Eastern District
High School. Dan's mother died
when he was just five years
old.
He was a Staff Sgt. in World
War II in the European Theatre
of War and took part in the Nor-mandy
Invasion and five battle
campaigns. At one time his out-fit,
the 462nd Anti-Alrcraft Bat-talion,
a mobile unit was directly
under General Patton. He hit
Omaha Beach and remembers it
vividly and his own men of B
Battery of the 462nd were the
very first American soldiers to
enter Paris among the American
forces. He recalled the first
service held in the Cathedral
of Notre Dame, when the priest
pointed out that Notre Cteme has
survived save a few bullet holes
many battles and many wars over
the centuries.
Dan was married while on
furlough to the former Frances
Biello, also of Brooklyn and the
couple moved to Lynbrook in
1946. They have two children,
Daniel, Jr., age 26 an electronics
engineer with General Electric
and daughter, Julia, now Mrs,
Thomas Murray of Lynbrook.
Dan has been associated with
the village since 1946, first work-ing
for the Department of Works,
and later, joining the Lynbrook
Police Force,
His favorite hobby is puttering
around his home fixing things and
most of all enjoying his grand-
. child, Thomas Murray Jr. who
weighed into this weary old world
at a magnificent 9 lbs, 11 oz.and
is now, a terrific child and just
about the most wonderful little
boy in the world according to his
fond slightly prejudiced grand-father.
The way his face lights up
when he mentions this beloved
grandson tells the tale of the close
bond of love and affection between
grandparents and their grand-children.
He is a member of Howard
Lathrop Post No. 2307 of the
V.F.W, and is a Third Degree
Knight of St. Mary's Council
Knights of Columbus, a member
of the Nassau Police Conference,
the New York State Police Con-ference
and the Nassau County
Columbian Assoc.
His wife is an excellent cook
and his favorite dish is Roast
Prime Ribs of Beef and next to
that some of his wife's Italian
specialities.
One of the most memorable
days of his life occurred when
he stopped a suspicious vehicle
Daniel Carrano
on Sunrise Highway and the driver
zoomed up and away with part of
his coat in the vehicle, D^ was
dragged several hundred feet and
suffered leg injuries. The sus-picious
vehicle turned out to be
a stolen car and was found aban-doned
later in Valley Stream.
Dan is called "Uncle Danny"
with the greatest affection by
many local children and it speaks
well of the deep affection and
respect the Lynbrook Police
Force is held in that nearly
every local resident and business
person will nod or speak a cheery
greeting to the officer on the
comer or stop and exchange a
few brief words with one of the
local officers on the Force, The
Public Relations between the
police and the public on the local
scene are excellent. The resident
taxpayers feel that they can ab-solutely
depend on their own
Police Force and Police Chief
Walter Waring received a Spec-ial
Letter of Commendation and
Thanks from Gov, Rockefeller
when he agreed to serve once
more as the head of Police Train-ing
Council of New York State.
A survey made last year revealed
that about 76% of local residents
were in favor of retaining their
own fine Police Dept. Danny Car-rano
is one of the valued mem-bers
of the Police Dept. and knows
so many people in the community.
He believes from his own vast
experience that young people
ought to have more parental su-pervision
than they do nowadays
in many homes and this would
lessen community problems with
the under 18 set.
Danny has always earned the
deepest respect from his co-workers
his family and friends
as he is a man of fine principles
and quite devoted to his work
and to his community. He is a
member of the famous Spinelli-
Carrano family. Many members
of his family have been residents
here for over 50 years. His
Aunt Anna Spinelli is one of
the relatives who have life-long
roots here in Lynbrook, U.S.A.
Danny and his wife particularly
enjoyed a vacation trip, they made
to Williamsburg, Virginia and to
Virginia Beach and Norfolk.
E^nny remembers the war
years when he was under the
direct orders of Gen. Patton and
