George Haburay is the new
Officer-In-Charge of the Lyn-brook
Post Office sent by Re-gional
Headquarters to replace
Postmaster A1 Hart, who has
retired after many years of serv-ice
in the Lynbrook Post Office.
George was born and raised
in New York City, graduating
from Brooklyn Tech High School
and the City University of New
York with an A.B. Degree. His
father was Austrian American
and his mother was English and
Irish and he is a tall, muscular
but lean and handsome 6 ft. 1
in in height with dark brown
hair and eyes and a pleasant
genial manner. He was born in
1939 and went straight from col-lege
into government service.
He has spent five years with
the Social Security Administra-tion,
serving as a Claims Repre-sentative,
and a Claims
Authorizer.
For three years he was with
the Post Office Department, at
the Regional Office in New York
City, and at Headquarters in
Washington, D.C. The three years
were spent in a special program
to develop postal management,
including assignments in the
various divisions of the Regional
Office (e.g. Logistics, Finance,
Post Office & Delivery Services,
Personnel, and the Office of the
Regional Director. Also included
in the program was an assignment
with the Office of Public Informa-tion
at the Washington, D.C. head-quarters,
as well as an assign-ment
with a mail-related firm in
private industry (i.e. American
Airlines).
Since he joined the Postal Serv-ice,
Mr. Haburay has been attend-ing
the Arthur T. Roth Graduate
School of Business Administra-tion,
Long Island University, and
has also completed Civil Service
Commission Courses in Manage-ment.
The U.S. Post Office
handles more mail than any other
post office in the world and in
1969 it was approximately 80
billion pieces. The new trend
has been to try to facilitate mail
delivery and streamline the post
office with zip codes, and many
other excellent methods.
George is married to the
former Iris Favinl since 1963
and they make their home in the
Bronx. They both love bike rid-ing
on weekends and have new
ten-speed French racers and go
zipping through the Flushing
Meadow Park, former site of the
World's Fair which covers a
large area for this type of sport.
They enjoy tennis and George
has an enormous and varied col-lection
of music including every-thing
from Bach to modern pla6es
for hi§ Stereo-Hi-Fi. They have
by Annette Ling
an unusual pet called "Plato"
who is a smaller size parrot
from Central America. So far,
Plato has shown no inclination
to talk "people talk" as his
species evidently seldom do,
but one never knows. He also
likes photography and has some
nice equipment for this hobby.
George and his wife are ardent
Conservationists, especially of
endangered wild-life all over the
world and they belong to the N.Y.
Zoological Society and the
African Wild-Life Assoc. and are
very much interested in all forms
of conservation.
He expects to be here in Lyn-brook
from either three months
or possibly six months as Of-ficer-
In-Charge at the Lynbrook
Post Office and explained that
there is a new system for select-ing
new Postmasters as candi-dates
and potential holders of the
post must be reviewed thoroughly
by the Postmaster Selection
Boards in the 15 Regional areas
of the U.S. New York State, the
Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico
make lip the largest of these
regional offices.
George wears dark horn-rim-med
glasses and looks like the
new type of executive one might
find in an I.B.M. office or. per-haps
as a dynamic young profes-sor,
because at 31 years of age,
he already is piling up quite a
distinguished career with quite
a list of credits all on the plus
side. He is certainly a very fine
young executive and a thoroughly
nice human being. We expect to
hear much more of him in the
future. MVB Office
