NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEK- L to R) Thomas Driscoll
Mayor of Malverne; Pat Mazza, Flotilla Public Relations Officer
and William Sheeser, former Mayor of Malverne.
Mr. August A. Ulm, Lynbrook's
Man of the Year, outstanding
resident and volunteer worker of
the Lynbrook Recreation Com-mission
was born in Brooklyn,
N.Y. like so many other Lyn-brook
residents. His father and
mother, August and Catherine
are both deceased. He has one
brother, Robert, retired, and a
resident of Hampton Bays, Long
Island. His sister, Ann, Mrs,
Henry Lorey lives in Franklin
Square with her family. Another
brother, Frank, a resident of
Gilbertsville, N.Y. is deceased.
Gus attended parochial school
In Brooklyn, until the age of 11,
when his family moved to
Bellaire. He was graduated from
Jamaica High School where he
was an outstanding high school
athlete, playing in every sport,
especially baseball and football.
During those years of his early
life, he was a valued member
of a Semi-Pro Baseball Team
called the Montauks. He joined
the staff of the New York Tele-phone
Company right after his
graduation from high school and
has been a New York Telephone
Company employee for the past
forty years, and twenty-five of
that period as a Supervisor. Many
of the present N.Y. Telephone
Company officials trained under
Gus Ulm and he has always
thoroughly enjoyed both his work
and the host of friends he has
made there during the years.
He was married to the former
Frances D, Smith on Jan. 28,
1933. They had one son, Lee
Andrew, a third year student
at University of Georgia and a
graduate of Lynbrook High who
was killed in an auto accident
in Georgia in 1962. One of Lee's
best friends, Anthony Scafurihas
been just like a son to them
ever since, and now that he is
married to the former Linda
Thomanns, their children call
Mr. and Mrs. Ulm, Grandpa and
Grandma and are a delight to
their heart. They both spoke of
the family of Mr. and Mrs. Tony
Scafuri with such deep emotion
and obvious love, it is easy to
see that Tony Scafuri and his
wonderful little family are just
like their very own and deeply
loved by the Ulms.
They moved to Lynbrook in
1939 and have lived at their
present address at Fenimore St.
ever since becoming more and
more involved in community
service and helping their be-loved
church. Our Lady of Peace
with various projects that Gus
was involved with over the years.
Gus Ulm has been with the Lyn-brook
Recreation Commission
for 19 years; He was originally
appointed by the late Mayor Fred
Greis and has been re-appoint-ed
ever since. He served as
Chairman of the Recreation Com-mission
for 9 years and still
serves his home community as
a valued member of the Commis-sion
at the present time. He
has been Chairman of the Our
Lady of Peace Catholic Youth
Committee. He was Chairman
of Boy Scout Troop #85 and Co-
Chairman with Mr. Robert Beck-er
on the drive for a new school
August A. Ulm
for Our Lady of Peace. He was
Co-Chalrman of the Dad's Club
of Lynbrook High School and has
been on every Citizens' Advisory
Committee for Lynbrook High
School since 1953.
In appearance, Gus Ulm is a
quiet modest man of 5 ft., 8 in.
in height with deep soft brown
eyes and brown hair with touches
of grey which give him quite
a distinguished air. His favorite
food is steak and sauerbraten,
and next to that comes all types
of Italian food even though he
is of German American descent.
He loves all sports, especially
his first love, baseball and now,
golf, when he can find time. His
great love of people and kindly
air, make him one of the easiest
folks to talk to, and his interest
in all young people and the youth
of Lynbrook need no further ex-planation,
because his record of
service to them is quite
unequalled, despite the loss of his
own beloved son.
Gus Ulm attributes all of his
success as a volunteer to his
wonderful wife, Frances, because
of her great understanding and
the many lonely hours she has
had to take care of the thousands
of volunteer hours of work of
his various projects and com-mittees.
His wife, Frances, an
attractive, vivacious lady of great
charm is also a great sports
fan and enjoy s baseball and games
and athletics. She also has a great
love for the youth of . Lynbrook
and this has enabled Gus to con-tinue
with his volunteer work for
the past 19 years with her loyal
support and encouragement.
Gus stated that his work with
the Recreation Commission
brought him a host of friends,
among them the late wonderful
Lynbrook Lion, Bill Albern. Gus
remarked that just being in his
company for a brief time was
a great joy, because Bill was
such a dynamic and interesting
person. He also mentioned
the late Sid Covert as another
outstanding example of the way
his own life has been greatly
enriched by fine folks he has
come into contact with who be-came
valued friends. Both he
and his wife, Frances love to
