Sat. July 4
July 4th is the closest type
of celebration we have in Amer-ica
to being our Nation's birth-day,
It is the day we recognize
the independence of our nation
and the origin of our freedom.
It is a time to reflect on those
of our founding fathers who, hav-ing
all the material things in
life, wanted something more —
the right to representative gov-ernment.
Every year there are many
local celebrations in the small
towns and villages of Long Is-land
and across the land. These
will be held once again as an
expression of our faith in and
gratitude for a good land.
TTiis year there will be a
special celebration. This will
take the form of a gigantic cele-bration
in the Nation's Capital
in Washington, D.C. It will be
a celebration to end all celebra-tions
on the Glorious Fourth,
It is being called, Honor A-merica
Day, Its purpose is to
fekindle the American spirit of

When the 3rd week in June
was officially proclaimed "Lyn-brook,
U.S.A. Week" by Mayor
Francis X. Becker, evenhecould
not have anticipated the unprece-dented
turnout of Lynbrookites
to the various activities of the
week. Jerry Cusimano, the Lyn-
^brook Week chairman, said "We
knew that the enthusiasm was
there, but there were twice as
.many people as we expected at
every activity — this was the
greatest turnout I've ever seen
in this Village."
And so it was — literally
thousands of people were at the
Earle Avenue parking lot on
Thursday night for the big block
party. Two bands played on
Showmobile Units provided by
Supervisor Ralph Caso and the
Town of Hempstead. One played
rock music for the younger
generation and the other played
contemporary and nostalgic "big
band" numbers for those with
a yen to reminisce. The con-cessions
which were selling pizza
and soda and hamburgers and
frankfurters and giving away bal-loons
were literally mobbed from
6:00 on when Stauderman Avenue
was closed off. The Fire De-partment's
Floodlight Unit stayed
on the job to provide additional
illumination and the Police De-partment,
including the Auxiliary
helped re-direct traffic.

night of the week was unable
m
to dampen the spirits of those
who came out for the Musicals
and Dancing Under The Stars.
The only thing that didn't come
off was the starlight --thebuild-ing
at Greis Park was bulging
with enthusiastic Villagers who
were determined to have a great
time despite the elements —
and the band played and the
people sang and it made every-one
forget it was even raining
outside. This particular event
was sponsored by Ed Larsen,
Babe DeLuca and the Recrea-tion
Commission. Then Mayor
Becker presented Marjorie B.
Swarthout and August Ulm with
the Woman and Man of the Year
Awards for their continuing out-standing
contributions to the
community and the young people
particularly. Mr. August "Gus"
Ulm has given 19 years of serv-ice
as a member of the Lyn-brook
Recreation Center, nine
of them as Chairman and Miss
Marjorie Swarthout has retired
from Lynbrook High School after
40 years of service as teacher
and later, for twenty years as
Guidance Counselor.
Earlier in the week, the Mayor
and Trustees served coffee and
c ^ e at all three railroad sta-tions.
On Monday, they met
the commuters at Lynbrook Sta-tion;
on Tuesday everyone said
hello at Westwood and on Wednes-day,
the Mayor and Trustees
were serving up an abbreviated
breakfast at the Center Avenue

Building - Mayor Becker seated between Gus Ulm Lynbrook Man of
the Year and Marjorie Swarthout, Lynbrook Woman of the Year with

Road on June 27th Mr. and Mrs. Kreisner, who donated the fountain,
