to the Mayor were Jay F. Korth, Village Attorney; Joseph Vitelli,

Earlier in the Spring, Mayor
Becker, anticipating this sub-stantial
budget increase of ap-proximately
$100,000. over last
year's budget, appealed to the
residents of Lynbrook to give him
their feelings about maintaining a
local police force. He pointed out
tliat since the Department repre-sents
approximately 1/3 of the
total budget, he felt that all tax-payers
should have a say in the
matter. The Mayor and Trustees
were almost immediately over-whelmed
with a very positivere-action
from the Village. Almost
without exception, the people de-manded
that the local force be re-tained.
An independent survey
conducted by the HELM, a local
newspaper in Lynbrook, sub-stantiated
this thinking. In view
of the evident reaction, the Mayor
and Board of Trustees proceeded
to negotiate with the P.B.A. with-out
bringing the matter to an of-ficial
— and costly — referen-dum.
In this period. Mayor Beck-er
made it abundently evident that
he and the Board were most
anxious to retain a local force
and they were all extremely
gratified by the over-whelming
vote of confidence given to the
Lynbrook Police Department by
the Village taxpayers.
