LYNBROOK MALVERNE EAST ROCKAWAY
VOL. 9 NO. 52 i U i t ' f t ^ f • Second-Class Matter
Post Office, Lvnbrook. N. Y. LY 3-1300 THE FAMILY NEWSPAPER Thursday, May 28,1970
New 5th C .D.
STATE SENATOR NORMAN F. LENT, Republican candidate for
Congress, holds aloft the new court-approved 5th Congressional
District map. Contrary to Rep. Allard K. Lowenstein's charges
of Republican "gerrymandering," the new 5th C.D. gives Mr. Lowen-stein
a registration edge more favorable than he had in his last
election.
At bottom, Lent shows what he considers a hatchet job of the
district—Liberal party gerrymandering of the 5th CD, drawn to
favor their candidate Lowenstein. This map, rejected by the U.S.
Supreme Court, cuts across village and county lines, wandering
well into Queens County to pick up heavily-Democratic areas.

Nathaniel E. Zelby, distinguished VUlage Justice of the Incor-porated
VUlage of Lynbrook was bom in Boston, Mass. in 1905
and is a familiar and very respected figure in this area. His father
and mother, Samuel and Dina are now deceased. He has one brother.
Max, an Accountant and'resident of Brooklyn. His sister, Sarah, Mrs.
J, Sadur lives in Boston,
Judge Zelby attended public schools in Boston, graduating from
English High School and St, Lawrence University, He is a graduate
of Brooklyn Law School, He first practiced law in New York City and
founded the firm of Zelby and Bernstein, He married the former
Roslyn Berlinger in June, 1938, He and his wife lived for a number
of years on Shore Rd, in Brooklyn,
They moved to Lynbrook in 1942 and still reside in the same home
here on Picadilly Downs in the Yorkshire section of Lynbrook, U.S.A.
They have three children, Wane, Mrs. Richard Strasser, a graduate
of Connecticut College for Women, who obtained herMaster's Degree
from her studies at both Radcliffe and Columbia University, She is
now a Guidance Counselor in the Tarrytown School District where
she and her husband make their home, Susan, age 26, a graduate

Social Research is an Executive Secretary with a Law firm special-izing
in International work. Their youngest child, Daniel, age 21 is a
graduate of Valley Stream Central High School, Temple University,
and is now preparing to enter New York University Dental School,
The judge favors all shades of blue like 99% of American males
and is a slim, compact 5 ft, 7 in, in height. He definitely has the
look of authority that sometimes comes to those who are in his
position but with an innate kindliness and understanding that is very
rare in this day and age. He has a great compassion for the youth
of America and has high hopes for greater understanding between
many of them and the older generations.
During the term of the late Lynbrook Mayor Ross he was appointed
in Oct, 1947 to fill out the term of the late Charles Schweitzer, He
ran for election in 1948 and has been re-elected ever since.
The Judge has a deep love for the community of Lynbrook and its
residents and pointed out that 90% of our people usually go to local
vUlage courts during dieir lives and the contact that they receive
there with the law is extremely important in our democracy. Judge
Zelby is a member of the American Bar Assoc,, the New York Bar
Assoc., a member of the New York State Executive Committee of
the N.Y, State Magistrates Assoc., a member of the Nas-sau
Magistrates Assoc., a member of the Lawyers Club
of New York, a member of Modin Lodge, Masonic Temple, a Noble
Member of the Kismet Temple of the Shriners and a Vice-President
of Congregation Beth David. His court has won two awards from the
American Bar Assoc, The first award was the only one given in the
state of New York and the second in the U.S. He is also a former
Trustee of the Y.M.H.A. of Central Nassau,
In 1964, Judge Zelby was awarded the highly prized and coveted
"Justitia" award from the American Bar Assoc, for his outstanding
achievements in community relations, public information, corrective
penal objectives and educational practices. This is such a great
honor conferred on Judge Zelby, that he certainly must be a remark-able
judge and a fine man in every sense of the word. He prays that
there be more "understanding hearts" on the part of both the younger
and older generations and that both seek greater compassion and
patience in working out differences of opinion. If the old saw is
true, that to really know what a man is like, ask either his wife
or his secretary. Judge Zelby is the most admired and respected
gentleman in town with a built in loyal fan club right in his own office
and home.
He plays golf, but particularly enjoys photography and the fine
outdoor sport of swimming. Judge Zelby loves Sarasota, Florida,
