Tragic Fire Claims Five Lives

"The worst f i r e in the history
of this Village," said Lynbrook
Fire Chief Pasquale Cestonewho
praised the members of the de-partment
for their valiant at-tempt
to save the Levy family,

Basslin and Robert Backman and
the Fire Chidf, f i r s t on the scene
Sunday morning, were unable to
enter the house because of heavy
black smoke. F l a m e s w e re
shooting out of the front of the
house and up the stairwell. Nine
pieces of equipment and over 100
fireman responded. L a d d e rs
were raised to the second floor
and firemen brought the trapped
people out onto a second-floor
ledge, where they worked over
them for half an hour in vain.
All had apparently died of smoke
inhalation.
The dead were, Leonard Levy,
50, owner of the Professional
Porter and Window Cleaners of
Lynbrook; his wife, Ruth; their
daughters, Barbara, 15, and
Jeanette, 14, and a son, Edward,
9. The family's poodle dog
also perished.
Treated for shock at South
N a s s a u Communities Hospital
was the oldest daughter, Helene,
21, a nurse, who escaped after
Jumping from an attic bedroom
window to a second-floor ledge
then to the ground and turned in
the alarm.
Another son, Ira, 22^ is serving
with the Army in Korea. TTieRed
Cross notified him of the tragedy.
Only two weeks ago, he returned
to duty after having been home on
leave.
The entire family was active
at Temple Emanu-El, where the
temple's youth group held a mem-orial
service Sunday night. Levy
was a former member of the
board of directors and a past
chairman of the Social Action
Committee there, and both he
and his wife at one time head-ed
the Library Committee.

Did It Again!
On Sunday, January 14th, about
8:15 PM., Ptl. Henry Hinckofthe
Lynbrook Police D e p a r t m e nt
while on motor patrol duty ob-served
a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette
being operated n o r t h b o u n d on
E)enton Avenue near H a r r i et
Place, Ptl. Hinck observed the
