Assails
Welfare
Dept.
North Hempstead Supervisor
Sol Wachtler revealed today
what he called "shocking ad-ministration"
in Nassau's Wel-fare
Department.
According to Wachtler, the
Republican candidate for County
Executive: - In 1966, Nassau
County spent nearly $500,000
more than Suffolk County in
local administration welfare
costs but Suffolk handled over
30 per cent mare cases.
-According toareportofComjv
troller Levitt, the average case
load for a New York City cler-ical
employee in the V/eUare
Department is twice that hand-led
by his Nassau counterpart.
- According to the same rep-ort,,
Nassau has twice the cler-ical
employees of Onandaga
County which handles more wel-fare
cases than we do.
Wachtler charged,"The myth
of streamlined, more business-like
government in Nassau is
exposed as the facts become
apparent, and the facts reveal
why our county tax rate has
been so high.
"In 1962, Mr. Nickersonsaid
'I would not permit employees
to be hired without full and
detailed justification in each
case.' "
Wachtler asserted, "It str-ains
the Imagination to believe
that the 4,000 persons he added
to the County payroll were hired
with fuU and detailed justifi-cation
in each case."
The 37-year-old official com-mented,"
It seems Nassau Coun-ty
government has become a
sort of modern Noah's ark with
Mr. Nlckerson Inviting two of
everything along for the
cruise."
New Drain
County Executive Eugene
Nlckerson has approved plans
prepared by the Department of
Public Works for construction
of a drainage line from Ocean
Avenue near Prospect Avenue
to Mill River.
At present, Ocean Avenue and
its drainage area is drained by
a 30 Inch pipe running to Mill
River under a portion of the E.
Rockaway High School building.
This drain Interferes with con-struction
on the addition to the
School, according to Public
Works Commissioner Herbert
J. Simins. A new drain will
therefore by constructed along
theedge of the property based
on an easement granted by the
School District.
The proposal is expected to be
