Freak Storm Hits Mayor Becker
East Rockaway & Lynbrook Negotiates
Early Saturday evening a fierce, freak storm hit sections of East For City Land
Rockaway and Lynbrook. This was similar to a storm that hit the
area in August of 1965. Although the whole metropolitan area was
lashed by driving rain and flooding conditions, a tornado-like storm
drove through the two villages, tearing off limbs of trees like
toothpicks and uprooting whole trees. The pictures on this page
show some of the damage and cleanup operations by the Lynbrook
Department of Public Works on Sunday morning.
Non-r^rtisan Committee
FormediT0 Select Trustee
To Fill ER Vacancy
Lynbrook Mayor Francis X.
Becker has reopened negotiations
with New York City officials on
city owned property in the village.
New York City owns such proper-ties
as Greis Park, on which the
village has perpetual surface
rights, the property at the rear
of the Liberty Mutual Building,
known as the John St. parking
field, the property on the east side
of Ocean Ave. near Tanglewood
Preserve, as well as many other
pieces now undeveloped or used
for parking.
Becker stated that Lynbrook
has been hampered for years be-cause
it lacks title to these prop-erties.
He pointed out that, "The
John St. parking field has re-mained
a mud hole in wet weather
and a dust bin in dry weather be-cause
the village could not nego-tiate
either the purchase or the
long term lease necessary before
improvements could be made.
"The Ocean Ave. property is
owned by New York City who has
leased the surface rights in per-petuity
to the Long Island State
Park Commission who in turn has
granted a license for the surface
rights to the village. Here again,
the area has remained undevel-oped
because we do not have own-ership.
These are the difficulties
we are attempting to solve."
John C. Dillon of Easrt Rock-away,
President rft.the East Ro-ckaway
Citizens Pai-ty, has an-nounced
the formation of a non-partisan
three-man committee to
select a candidate to fill the va-cancy
on the East Rockaway Vil-lage
Board caused by the untimely
death of Trustee Joseph Minore.
The present Board, whicji
consists of two Trustees from
the Citizens Party and the Mayor
and one Trustee from the rival
Action Party, has been unable
to reach an agreement on a can-didate
to fill the vacancy.
-The members of the Non-partisan
Committee are Charles
H, Machleid, Chairman of the
Board of the Peninsula National
Bank, Thomas F. Doherty, a
member of the East Rockaway
School Board, and Hal U. Fisher,
President of the East Rockaway
Civic Association.
Machleid, Doherty and Fish-er,
none of whom are connected
with either of the political parties
in the Village, will canvass the
Village and seek a qualified can-didate
from outside the ranks of
either Party to present to the
Village Board as a candidate for
appointment to fill the vacancyl
Such appointee would agree in
advance to serveonly until March
1968, when an election is scl^ed-uled.
In this way, neither politi-cal
party could gain an advantage
by endorsing an "incumbent"
candidate.
Dillon's announcement foll-owed
Mayor Berg's rejection of
Dillon's previous recommenda-tion
of the formation of a bi-partisan
committee consisting of
a panelist from the Citizens Par-ty,
one from the Action Party
and a neutral panelist, all to
select a neutral candidate for the
seat. Mayor Berg said that he
would continue pressing for an
Action Party appointment, and,
if an impasse persists, would
request Gov. Rockefeller to call a
special election rather than to
adopt Dillon's solution.
Dillon stated that under Vil-lage
Law an election must be held
in March, 1968 in any case and
an interim election now would
cost the taxpayers many thou-sands
of dollars, resulting in no
more than the election of a Tr-ustee
for six months. He said
that if the political parties can-not
break the deadlock on the
Village Board then we must rely
upon unimpeachable citizens of
the Village to solve the problem
for us.
