Lynbrook Seeks Ban
On Apt. Houses
At the Lynbrook Village Board meeting Monday, Mayor Francis
X, Becker requested the Board of Trustees to direct that an
amendment to the zoning ordinance be drawn which would pre-clude
the further construction of apartment houses.
In his formal statement Becker discussed the many problems
that apartment houses have been responsible for including: traf-fic
and parking congestion, the overcrowding of land and the
undue concentration of population, as well as air pollution. He
pointed out that 1960 census figures revealed that the number
of people per square mile in Lynbrook was more than twice
as great as the Nassau County average.
There are more than 1,000 apartment units now existing with
rentals varying from low to luxury status. He stressed the ne-cessity
of maintaining Lynbrook's character as a residential
community.
Becker stated: "I am not opposed to apartment houses per
se. I recognize that they serve a most necessary and useful
purpose. However, I also recognize that limits must be deter-mined
with which multiple dwellings are compatible with the
predominant land uses. I have concluded, therefore, that after
fully considering all the facts at my disposal, that such a limit
has been attained."
Lynbrook's planning commission had already recommended
this zoning change. A public hearing was scheduled for Sept.
11, 1967 at the Village Hall on the amendment.
CORNERING BEAUTY FOR LYNBROOK- Lynbrook's Beautification Program turns its attention
to the North West Area of the village as Wallace Ross of Malverne, (third from right) Long Is-land
Lighting Co.'s public relations representative, explains the plans for landscaping the com-pany's
property between Whitehall and Hendrickson Avenues. Listening to the details are (left
to right), Floyd Wilcox, Lynbrook's Superintendent of Public Works; Peter Adamson, President
of the West Lynbrook Association; Lynbrook Mayor Francis X. Becker, Mr. Ross, Salvatore M;ir-tino,
Vice President of the West Lynbrook Association; and HELM columnist, Marilyn Sherman.
The project, the initial step in an anticipated esthetic overhauling for.the entire section, was sug-gested
by the West Lynbrook Association and made possible through the efforts of Lynbrook of-ficials
and LILCO. — —

Beautification
Progress has been reported
by Mayor Becker on his beau-tification
efforts. Tree plant-ing
on the mall along Sunrise
Highway, has been accomplish-ed
through the efforts of Parks
Commissioner Bill Albern and
contributions from local resi-dents.
Nassau County has agreed
to allow the Village to plant
shrubbery in the mall area
on Merrick Road.
Becker stated that he was
continuing his talks with Nas-sau
County authorities which he
hopes will lead to the beauti-fication
of mall areas at Hemp-stead
Avenue and Merrick Road,
as well as the creation of a
park for passive recreation pur-poses
at Peninsula Boulevard •
and Rockaway Avenue.
The combined efforts of Lyn-brook
officials and the West
Lynbrook Civic Association
have resulted in the beautifi-cation
of the Long Island Light-ing
Company property at Hen-drickson
and Whitehall.
Becker stated his belief that
the Citizens Committee on
Beautification, soon to be form-ed,
will lead to many achieve-ments
along these Unes.
