THUMBS DOWN
Approximately 80% of tl)e registered voters turned oiit Tuesday
in Malverne School District 12's special election to vote on four
propositions to implement the order of Commissioner Allen for
integrating the three elementary schools in the district.
As was expected, all four propositions were defeated - but
the margins were far greater than expected, especially on the
two propositions for busing.
The tally showed the two busing propositions being defeated
3,248-755 and 3,267-737; the proposition to purchase relocatable
classrooms went down 3,573-363, and the 4th, for improvements
in all three schools, but particularly Woodfield Road, lost by
3,598-301.
Since the planned transfer of students, which was to have
begun next Monday, has been put off until a ruling is handed down
in the Olsen case (Commissioner Allen has extended the deadline
until March 1), this overwhelming vote of dissent may make Com-missioner
Allen and Governor Rockefeller take a further look at
this, and similar, situations.
Mr. Frank J. Becker, former member of the U. S. House of Rep-resentatives,
has been e ected Chairman of the Board of Suburbia

of the Board for 13 years. Mr. Becker is President of Frank J.
Becker, Inc., general and life insurance agency in Lynbrook. In
1965 he retired from Congress where he had served since 1952. He

and a delegate to the NATO Parliamentary Conference in Paris for
four years. Prior to his election to Congress, Mr. Becker served
eight years (four terms) as a Member of the Assembly of the State
of New York. He is a member of Lynbrook Post, Veterans of Foreign
Wars; Director of the Nassau County Tuberculosis and Public Health
Association; member Knights of Columbus; the Holy Name Society
and Knight of the Holy Sepulcher. Becker was former Chairman of
Catholic Charities of Nassau County; Past Commander of Lynbrook
Post, American Legion, and of the American Legion of Nassau Co-unty.
He is also a Past Exalted Ruler of the Lynbrook Lodge of Elks.
