SENATOR LENT C(X)LS OFF: State Senator Norman F. Lent (R-East
Rockaway), Chairman of the Joint Legislative Committee on
Public Health, practices physical fitness while taking a spin on water
skis over the Labor Day Weekend.
Receiver of Taxes Henry C. Von Elm of the Town of Hempstead
(right) looks on as aide Joseph Muti loads a station wagon with
records of unpaid property taxes. Less than 2% of the $85 million
total 1966 tax levy was uncollected by Von Elm's department. State
law demands that he turn records of the taxes not paid by Sept. 1,
over to the County Treasurer for collection. Penalties are added
each month until payment is made. Taxes were paid on 219,000
parcels of land, and only 6,292 parcels are still outstanding.
" I am deeply shocked that my
opponent would allow anyone, es-pecially
one of his friends, to
brand the people of the Fifth Con-gressional
District as reaction-a
r i e s , " said Thomas Brennan,
Republican candidate for' Con-gress
in this district.
"It only goes to prove that
the freshman representative do-esn't
know the people and their
problems in this District," said
Brennan. "He has been too busy
blindly 'rubber stamping' the ad-ministration's
endless spending
'Great Society' programs to wor-ry
about the people back home."
"In kicking off his reelection
campaign, my opponent allowed a
vice president of the AFL-CIOto
make the wild charge that 're-actionaries
with lots of money'
are trying to unseat him. Also,
that I cannot run on any real is-sues,
but am only trying to be-fuddle
the voter and sneak into
office," said Brennan.
Brennan said, "My campaign
is being supported by the people
of the Fifth Congressional Dis-trict.
The laborers, the business
men, the housewives, the white
collar man, the professional man,
people from all walks of life, of
this great area, who by the thou-sands
want once more to return
an independent, common sense
representative to Congress, not a
man who mechanically goes along
with the administration's poli-cies
in hopes of winning favor
with that administration.
"These people are not ' r e -
actionaries,' but solid American
citizens. I call upon my opponent
to apologize to these people.
" I am not trying to hide my
record or ignore the issues and
sneak into office by going out-side
the district to bring in big
glamour names of my party,
"I ask who is trying to be-fuddle
the voter and sneak into
office when my opponent plans
to parade Sen. Robert Kennedy
across the district in an attempt
to dazzle the voters?
"I ask who is trying to be-fuddle
the voters when my oppo-nent
planrt to have President
Johnson vii^it here to appeal for
my opponent's return to Congress
where he ctn continue 'rubber
stamping' th^^ administration's
reckless spem^ing plans without
worrying about the people of his
congressional district.
"Instead of befuddling the is-sues
by parading lihe top names of
the Democrat Party across the
District, I call upon my opponent
to stop emulating the administ-ration's
propaganda line ancl let
the people of the Fifth Congres-sional
District know his answers
to the problems of inflation, Viet
Nam, crime in the streets, the
South Shore Wetlands and jet air
noise. Problems which have mu-shroomed
since the Democrats
assumed office."
Brennan concluded, "I will,
at the prescribed time, present
the necessary statements to p r -
ove that the people of the Fifth
Congressional District, who I
have never found to be reaction-ary,
are the ones supporting my
campaign. Can my opponent do
the same?"

Governor Nelson A, Rockefeller (center) receives the gift of a gavel
from Herman M. Schwartz (right). President of the Hempstead Furn-iture
Co. as State Senator John R. Dunne Oe^) looks on. The gavel
made of Brazilian rosewood, was manufactured by Mr. Schwartz at
his Hempstead factory and presented to the Governor during his
recent stop at Senator Dunne's District Office in the Garden City
Hotel. Since the start of the legislative session in January, Senator
Dunne has presented gavels manufactured by Mr. Schwartz to various
local organizations in the Senator's district. Prior to their presen-tation,
however, the gavels travelled to Albany where they were used
by Lt. Governor Malcolm Wilson as he presided over the Senate.
