Howard Herber
On the eve of his retirement next week and as a
testimonial dinner In his honor was being planned,
Dr. Howard T. Herber, Superintendent of Schools in
Malverne for 35 years, died Sunday moring at South
Nassau Communities Hospital.
Dr. Herber, because of his dedication, reiusea
to take it easy as advised, preferring instead to
continue to administer the strife-torn schools in
District #12 during the past hectic year.
A memorial scholarship fund will be set up in
his name.
Malverne Schools
Malverne Public Schools will
open on September 7 as planned.
Grades Kindergarten thru 3
will attend either Davison Ave-nue
or Lindner Place Schools;
Grades 4 and 5 will attend Wood-field
Road School.
Elementary schools will be
open August 29, 30, 31 Septem-ber
1 and 2 from 9 a,m. to noon,
for registration of children who
have not previously registered.
Junior and Senior High Schools
will be open at the same time for
registration of new students.
A transfer should be presen-ted
for a child who has attended
another school previously. A pre-vious
report card is also help-ful,
Birth certificate should be
brought for children who will be
attending school for the first
time. It is desirable for a parent
to accompany a student regis-tering
for the first time.
School sessions will be held
the first days of school as follows:
KINDERGARTEN - Sept. 7, 8,
9 - a.m. session 9-10:30; p.m.
session 12:30-2 - Thereafter -
a.m. session 9-11:30; p.m. ses-sion
12:30-3.
GRADES 1-3 - September 7 -
9-11:30 a.m. - Thereafter - 9-
11:30 a.m. and 12:30-3 p.m.
GRADES 4-5 - September 7 -
8:45-11:15 a.m. - Thereafter -
8:45-11:45 a.m. and 12:45-3:15
p.m.
GRADE 6 - September 7 -
8:35-11 a.m. and 1:15-3 p.m. -
Thereafter - regular schedule.
GRADE 7-12 - September 7 -
8:30-11 a.m. and 1-3:15 p.m. -
Thereafter - regular schedule.
Parents in grades Kindergar-ten
thru 5 will receive notice in
the mall of the class, room, tea-cher,
and school to which each
child is assigned. Grades 6-12
know their schedule and home-rooms
are posted on the doors
of the respective buildings.

place at their meeting on Sept.
12th. Liberal Party candidate for
State Senator Joseph Ciacciowill
speak at 9 p.m. and at 10p.m. the
speaker will be Senator Norman
F. Lent, Republican, running for
re-election.
All candidateswill talk for tw-enty
minutes following which a
Legion member will ask a list of
questions based on Legion policy
reqiiiring a 'Yes,' 'No' or 'Pass'
answer. (There will be no ques-tions
from the floor by Legion
members.)
Other mettings to be devoted
to political speakers will be Sep-tember
26th, October 10th and
October 24th. The speakers, all
of whom have confirmed their a-ppearance,
will be Dr. Carlton
Fisher, United for Peace candi-date,
Congress; Joseph Arenella,
Conservative candidate, Assem-bly;
Edward Falk, Conservative
candidate, Senate; EliWager, De-mocratic
incumbant. Assembly;
Thomas Brennan, Republican, C-ongress;
John Nigro, Democrat,
Senate; Herbert Tenzer, Demo-cratic
incumbant, Congress, and
Robert Blakeman, Republican in-cumbant,
Assembly.
