Macdonald, Pastor, is the Honorary Chairman and Mr. Joseph Viteili is the General Chairman of the
Committee planning Anniversary activities.
A festive dinner-dance on May 20th at the Sky Club in Roosevelt Field will climax a month-long series

cocktail hour, dinner and dancing. Dress is optional. Further information or reservations may be
obtained from Ticket Chairman, Mr. William Caulin, 5 Pearsall Avenue, Lynbrook.
One of the evening's highlights will be the announcement of the winners of a Bermuda Cruise for two,
and other valuable prizes. The raffle and prizes are under the direction of Mrs. Joseph O'Connor, 73
Hawthorne Street, Lynbrook.
A Silver Jubilee Journal is also planned as a permanent record of the history and growth of the parish.

The Most Rev. Walter P. — •
Kellenberg, D.D., bishop of the
Diocese of Rockville Centre, will
visit the parish of Our Lady of
Peace, Lynbrook, on Sunday, May
8, to mark the parish's 25th
anniversary.
Bishop Kellenberg will pre-side
at a silver jubilee Mass at
11 a.m. to be celebrated by the
Rt. Msgr. Ronald B. Macdonald,
pastor.
The Rev. Frederick J. Har-rer,
assistant pastor, will be
deacon at the Mass, while the
Rev. Vincent B. Dowling, M.M.,
will be sub-deacon. Father Dow-ling,
a Maryknoll Father on sab-batical
leave after six years in
the Philippines, is assisting in
the'parish.
The preacher at the Mass
will be the Rev. Peter Gallagher,
CSSR, a Redemptorist priest
from Philadelphia.
Besides presiding at the
Mass, Bishop Kellenberg will
also administer the Sacrament
of Confirmation to approximately
350 children at 3:30 p.m.
Born on the eve of World
War II, the new parish had its
start in a Knights of Columbus
Clubhouse, where the founding
pastor, the Rev. James Ayres,
offered the first Mass on Sept.
21, 1940.
In a little more than a year,
the first Mass was offered in
the new church which was still
not completely furnished. The
completed church was dedicated
in 1943.
After the death of Father
Ayres, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. John
F. McGowan (now pastor of Holy
Name of Mary Church in Valley
Stream) became pastor in 1953.
Msgr. McGowan carried out plans
for building a rectory adjacent
to the church, using as a basis a
house purchased earlier by Fath-er
Ayres.
Msgr. McGowan also built
the school, dedicated in 1957,
just after the new Diocese of
Rockville Centre was estab-lished.
The school opened that year,
staffed by lay teachers and the
Sisters of Mercy of Brooklyn,
with eight classrooms and an
auditorium.
Neighborhood Schools
All The Way
The three pro-neighborhood
school candidates, John W. Lew-is,
Venerando Indelicato and Cha-rles
W. Reardon, scored smash-ing
victories in Malverne's vo-ting
on Tuesday. As urged by
these candidates, the four prop-ositions
on the ballot, one the
budget for the coming year, all
went down to defeat.
Candidates backed by Lake-view
groups and the newly for-med
We Care were downed by
a 2 to 1 margin.
Lewis, running to fill the
unexpired term ending June 30,
1968, defeated Whiten 2692-1784;
Reardon, for the remainder of
the current term and for the
new 3 year term beginning July
1, 1966, won over Nordos and
Stone by votes of 2373-1444 and
535, and 2352-1345 and 506, re-spectively;
and Indelicato, for
the same two terms beat Theu-man
2610-1540 and 2510-1533.
The budgetwas defeated 2520-
1730; Kindergarten busing, 3031-
1155; Grades 1-5 busing, 3048-
1082; and Relocatable Classro-oms,
2806-1157.
The victors take their seats
on the School Board immediate-ly
and will control the Board.
They have pledged to use every
legal means to bring the neigh-borhood
school concept back to
Malverne.
ER Budget
Passes
Two hundred fifty-six voters
turned out at the Annual Meet-ing
of UFSD #19 to vote 194-62
in favor of the proposed budget.
Mr. PhUip Cody and Mr. Wil-liam
Brown ran unopposed to
continue on the School Board.
Mr. Cody received 217 votes
with write-ins for Philip Niel-sen,
John Brueggeman, Ralphe
Brande, Tom Doherty and Doro-thy
Arnesen; Mr. Brown recei-ved
228 votes with write-ins for
Philip Nielsen and Ray Arnesen.
Msgr. Macdonald, who had
been director of the building
commissions in both the Brook-lyn
and Rockville Centre Dio-.
ceses, was named pastor of the
parish in 1959.
In 1962, Msgr. Macdonald add-ed
a top floor of eight more
classrooms to the school.
Besides the school addition,
Msgr. Macdonald also acquired
extra property for possible fut-ure
use by the parish.
Chief sDinner
Ex-Chief John Wright, of the
East Rockaway Fire Department,
will be honored at a dinner which
will be held at the Valley Stream
Park Inn on the evening of May
6th.
Present to help make this
evening a success, will be the
members of the East Rockaway
Fire Department, State Senator
Norman Lent, Mayor Charles
Krull, members of the Village
Board, and many of his especial-ly
invited friends.
On April 20th, 1953, a resolution was introduced to add the words
"under God" to the pledge of allegiance to the flag. Both the House
of Representatives and the Senate adopted the resolution and it was
made the law of the land when President Eisenhower signed the bill
on June 14, 1954. East Rockaway American Legion Post #958 re-cently
presented plaques containing the up-to-date wording to each
of the three schools in the East Rockaway School District. Shown
above is Past Commander Ray Gimmler, commissioned by Com-mander
John Trum to do the honors, presenting one of the plaques
to William A. Berg, principal of the East Rockaway High School.
