Ameeting of town, village and
school officials in areas affected
by the proposed Atlantic Exp-ressway
has been called by State
Senator Norman F. Lent (R-Lyn-brook),
to coordinate plans for
blocking the new highway.
The meeting, scheduled for
8:30 p.m., March 24, will take
place in the Lynbrook Village
Hall. Lent stated that the pur-pose
of the meeting "will be to
give village mayors, school of-ficials
and legislators a chance to
air the staggering economic pro-
^blems created by the Express-way."
In letters being sent to the
various officials in the affected
area, Lent urged them to bring
to the meeting all data concern-ing
buildings that will be demol-ished,
businesses that will be
lost and projected tax increases
resulting.
Lent pointed out that the new
roadway is scheduled to go thr-ough
the heart of all Sunrise
Highway communities which are
the core of the economic stabil-ity
on the South Shore.
In a survey conducted by one
South Shore village, a $40 Mil-lion
gross annual income would
be wiped out. Lent said, and 60%
of the businessmen affected said
they would not re-locate in that
village.
Although no definite plan for
fighting the roadway has been

Tuesday night the Lynbrook
Owls became South Shore bas-ketball
champs by defeating Un-iondale
57-56 in a thrill-packed
game which was decided right
before the final buzzer when Jim
Craig sank a 10 ft. jump shot
with 3 seconds remaining.
Lynbrook jumped off on top
and remained in front until late
in the 4th quarter when Union-dale
rallied and the lead see-sawed
back and forth setting
the stage for the thrilling fin-ish.
The Owls five Iron Men,
Craig, Metkiff, Brown, Fine and
Alia, played the entire game,
wl h Jim Craig ending up high
scorer with 17 points; Metkiff
had 15; Brown 14; Fine 11, and
Alia, playing his usual steady
floor game and not shotting, was
scoreless.
Bill Metkiff was named the
winner of the Sid Covert trophy
which goes annually to the out-standing
player on the south
shore.
Lynbrook, winner in Division
IV, with only a loss to New Hyde
Park in the last game of the
regular season tarnishing their
record, drew a bye in the first
mapped, the Senator said, it is
hoped the meeting will be the
the beginning of a strong move-ment
to compile the necessary
data to take the fight against
the project to both Washington
and Albany.
round of the tournament.
On March 8th, the Owls took
on Levittown Memorial and had
a real scare, barely edging them
62-60, when Jim Craig made 3
foul shots in the final 23 seconds.
Craig, Brown and Metkiff sco-red
19, 17 and 15 points re-spectively,
in this game.
Last Friday was a different
story, however, as Lsmbrook o-verwhelmed
Hewlett 62-47. The
final score was not indicative
of the one-sidedness of the con-test.
Bill Metkiff and Rick Brown
scored 46 of Lynbrook's 62 po-ints
and they completely domin-ated
the backboards. Lj^rook's
defense was tremendous, as it
has been all year, holding Hew-lett
to only 17 points in the first
half.
Now, it's on to Clarke Hi^
School Saturday afternoon for
the final game against Great
Neck South, North Shore Champs,
for the County Championship.
