Lynbrook Police
Alert OS Usual
While on radio motor patrol early
Sunday morning Ptl. Herbert Bird-sail
observed two youths operating
a 1960 Chevrolet convertible west
on Sunrise Highway. His suspicion
was aroused and he apprehended the
vehicle containing two occupants.
Investigation revealed the operator
to be Edward Shannon, 19 yrs., and
the occupant Michael Harte, 16 yrs.,
both of Brooklyn.
They had abandoned a car stolen
from Brooklyn in Lindenhurst and
then stole the Chevrolet. No al^rm
had been broadcast as the owner was
unaware his car was taken.
Shannon and Harte were arrested
and released to the Suffolk Police
after being arraigned before Judge
Nathan Zelby for driving without a
license.
Last Thursday, shortly after mid-night,
Lieut. Francis Tierney on
desk duty received a call from a resi-dent
that someone was in the cen-tral
Auto Service Station located at
176 Hendrickson Avenue.
Lt. Tieniey dispatched Sgt. Win.
Butt, Ptl. Jay Epstein and Frank
Carrizzo by radio to the scene. Upon
arriving the police officers observed
ti man leaving the service station
by a side door and apprehended
Frank Murphy, 23 yrs., of 65 3Rd.
Ave., East Rockaway, who had in
his possession money taken from the
cash register and in his car parked
nearby was merchandise taken from
the service station.
One Nation
Under God
By Felix Chabot
Over 600 adult parishioners of
Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Mal-verne,
this week petitioned United
States Supreme Court Justice Earl
Warren to keep the phase "under
God" in the United States Pledge
of Allegiance.
The petitions were made avail-able
by Edward Van Arsdale of
739 Maple PI., W. Hemp.stead.
Parishioners signed them outside of
the church and school hall after all
the Masses.
Van Arsdale started circulating
similar petitions eight weeks ago to
fight an attempt by Mrs. Madalyn
Murray, of Baltimore, Md., to elim-inate
"under God" from the pledge
by a ruling of the Supreme Court.
Mrs. Murray, an atheist, was in-strumental
in the recently success-ful
fight by a handful of people to
have the Supreme Court eliminate
prayer in the public schools.
Van Arsdale, a group and tours
coordinator for Fan American World
Airways, is a veteran of World War
I I , who lost both legs in the battle
for Vclletri during the Italian Carn-paign.
" I f one woman," said Van Ars-dale,
"could cause the teirible dan-ger
she has in eliminating God from
our country, I figured why couldn't
one man fight against her success-fully."
Phrase In Danger
The phrase "under God" in the
pledge, inserted several years ago
by Congress, is in danger of being
dropped, as was prayer in pubHc
schools, through the efforts of a
handful of atheists and others who
have found a solid basis for their
fight in the popular interpretation
of the first amendment of the Con-stitution—
the so called separation of
Church and State.

Stevenson
Resigns
At a weekly joint meting of the
executive committees of both the
Village and Suburban parties, Hu-bert
D. Stevenson's resignation was
accepted.
Mr. Vitelli, President of the Vil-lage
Party, said that if Mr. Steven-son
continues to speak, it will be
without authority from the party.
Have Yau Seen?

cat, wearing a pink collar, followed
his owner's children to the barber
shop last Tuesday and hasn't been
seen since.
Anyone having any information
regarding Charcoal, please call Mrs.
