Candidates' Statements
In a statement to the HELM, Mayor George Mangravite,
successful candidate for re-election to the office of Mayor of Lyn-brook,
called for a re-uniting of the people of Lynbrook toward
a common goal. The text of the statement foUoivs:
"We never had any doubt that the residents of Lyn-brook
would see clearly and know the best course to pur-sue
for our village. Home rule in our village is a workable
concept of our local government, and the Unity Party
uses it as a guideline.
Now, what we all must do is to forget the heat that
this contest has engendered, and everyone, together, get
back to work and keep Lynbrook moving along with the
family of villages in the county.
My associates on the Board join me in thanking sin-cerely
our many friends, and all those fine people in the
village who gave of their valuable time to bring our mes-sage
to the people. Their effort is greatly appreciated.
The vote cast indicates that the residents too appre-ciated
the public service rendered by these dedicated
workers and neighbors."
Watson Morgan, the defeated Village Party candidate for
Mayor stated to a HELM reporter that, "the people who worked
for me, worked hard. We brought a lot of ix^ople in the village
together and we awakened tlie people to the village tliat they
In e in."
He further said that the Village Party would continue to
.serve the comuuinity of Lynbrook.

Mayor
George Mangravite
Never before in tlie history of Lynbrook have so man\' elec-tion
issues, charges and counter-charges been shuttled back and
forth. Major controversial matters included policy on the build-ing
or limiting of apartment houses, establishment of a commu-nity
swimming pool, and a bitter debate about whether or not
billiard parlours would be pennitted in Lynbrook. That applica-tion
was denied on a State level.
In addition to the more normal electioneering, campaign
"gimmicks" included coffee and doughnuts for commuters, poster
signs (alleged in some cases to be illegally placed), transporta-tion
to the polls, and a wide mail and hand distribution of cam-paign
literature from all parties, as well as an intensive news-paper
advertistng campaign.
Shortly before election day another local w^eekly newspaper
headlined a report from the New York State Comptroller's office,
"criticizing the Mangravite rule." This was followed by a freely-voiced
counter-charge on the part of the Unity Party that \'illage
Party interests had purchased that newspaper to foment support
for its candidate. During the electioneering hysteria much was
made of Morgan's membership in the local school board, with a
warning that if he were elected politics might be brought into
the school system. Mr. Morgan promised to resign his school post
if he were elected.
