Editor Resigns
Art Christopher, editor of the
Village Party paper, the Town
Leader, resigned his position ef-fective
Febmary 22. The reason
for Mr. Christopher's resignation
involved conflict between the
paper's independence and the
V^illage Party politics.
Three teenage boys from Brook-lyn
are awaiting court action in
Kings and Nassau Coimties this week
as a result of having run down a
Lynbrook polic^eraan in an attempt
to flee in a stolen car.
The three—13, 14, and 15 years
old—whose names are withheld be-cause
of their age, are charged with
juvenile deliquency in the theft of
a car from Brooklyn, and assault
for having gunned the car into Lyn-brook
Ptl. Robert Herrmann who
attempted to ciuestion them.
The trio, according to Lynbrook
Police Chief Walter Waring, were
apparently on a "joy ride" Wr'st-bound
on Sunrise Highway through
Lynbrook when they were spotted
by off-duty Ptl, James Coan who
became suspicious because of their
age.
As they slowed for a red light at
Atlantic Ave., Coan, who was rid-ing
in his car alongside, called for
assistance from Ptl. Herrmann di-recting
trafl'ic at the intersection.
Wlien Herrmann approached the car
to question the youths, the driver ex-cellerated
and stmc^ Herrmann,
knocking him to the pavement.
Coan gave chase to Reyam Rd„
where the trio turned left into the
Yorkshire section,
Herrmann, meanwhile, dragged
himself to a call box and gave the
alarm. Six patrol cars responded and
fanned out through Yorkshire,
The police finally bottled up the
fugitives at the dead end of Can-terbury
Gate off Piccadilly Downs.
There the trio attempted to flee on
foot. Two were nabbed by Ptl. Coan
and Sgt, Francis Tierney after one
youngster threw a rock and struck
Coan, The third meml>er of the
group was later picked up at home
by Nassau County detectives,
Herrmann was treated for hip in-juries
and relieved from duty for
several days.
The youngsters were arraigned in
Brooklyn Family Court and Mine-ola
Family Court,
