Party stated that to qualify for
Mayor or Trustee under Section 42
of the Village Law of the State of
New York, such candidates must
own real estate on the assessment
rolls of the Village of Lynbrook at
the time of election and continuous-ly
during their term of office.
According to the spokesman, "It
was found that the only parcel of
real estate owned by Mayor Man-gravite
prior to election was deeded
to him by a corporation about three
weeks prior to election."
With this evidence, the Village
Party is demanding the immediate
ouster of Mayor Mangravite from
office, and has instructed their legal
council, Martin J. Weinstein to in-stitute
proceedings to enforce the
removal of the Mayor.
Denies Charge
Mayor Mangravite when advised
of the charge by the Village Party
said, "In all instances in which I
have been elected to public office
in the Village of Lynbrook, I have
been a duly and properly qualified
elector and tax-payer of the village.
The election to the office of Mayor
of March 1963 is no exception." The
Mayor also labeled the Village Party
charge as untrue.
In hitting back at the Village
Party, the Mayor said, "The Village
Party's charge of my not being a
taxpayer of Ljmbrook at>the time of
my election to the office of Mayor
or without such status at this mo-ment
is a fabrication, undoubtedly
with the purpose to foment discord
within the village once again."
" I f this is a sample of the kind
of contribution," he went on to say,
"a second political party -can give
Lynbrook, once again the people of
our village are being sorely imposed
upon." ^ :
Gambee: "Ridiculous"
Trustee James Gambee,' Acting
•Mayor for the Village of Lyrtbrqok
called the charge "Ridiculous and
typical of the shotgim blasts made
by these people in the past." "The
right way to handle^ this," Gambee
said, "if these charges were true,
would be to file evidence with the
Board of Elections and not go tp t^
papers hunting headlines,".
NOTE: If you do not know what election district you belong
to call the Board of Elections: PI 2-3000.
