Demonstrations, Unrest
Mark School Opening
Demonstrations and unrest marked the opening of sc,'hools in the Malverne School District
as members of UCAN picketed the Linder Place and Davison Avenue Schools. Some parent.s
tried to enroll their children at these schools to "force the adoption of the Princeton Plan."
Demonstrators also picketed the Woodfield Road School and many Negro parents kept their
children from attending that school on opening day.
Delaney Brings Suit Against School Board
Lloyd B. Delaney, integration
leader, brought suit against the Mal-verne
Scliool Board in a bid to have
them comply with Commissioner
Allen's Princeton Plan ruling.
Delaney was successful in having
papers served on School Board Pres-ident
Dr. Bayard l^eNoie late Tues-day
night. The school board was
due in coiut Wednesday on a show
cause order as to why they should
not put into immediate effect, Dr.

Defying an urgent appeal sent out
by the Malverne School Board last
week for parents to send their chil-dren
to school under the neiglibor-hood
school policy until the present
court action against Commissioner
Allen is settled, UCAN made plans
to picket the Woodfield Road School
and asked parents not to send their
children to that school. Wednesday
morning however, they surprised
the community by picketing all
grammar schools in the Mtflverne
School District and attempting to
enroll children at Davison Avenue
and Lindner Place Schools.
^ , Pickets^ at the ^ ^ Linctner Place
School oiiij' demonstrated for about
15 minuter. A few parents tried to
enroll their children but when told
they couldn't be accepted unless the
child had a transfer from the Wood-field
Road School, they quietly left.
Sit-ins AiTested
Demonstrators at the Davison
Avenue School picketed the school
grotmds all morning. A mmiber of
jiickets staged sit-ins in the school
auditorium. When asked to leave by
School Principal Ray B. Blank, all
but five left. W[lien the remaining
five refused to leave and a dis-turbance
was caused, Mr. Blank
called the Lynbrook Police Depart-ment.
Chief ^Valter Waring re-sponded
and told the sit-ins they
