Brooklyn at the time, their pedia-trician
recommended physical thera-py,
first from a visitinjf nurse and
:er at the Lonu Island ColU'^t'
Ispital. When Stephen was foiu"
years old, Mr. and NIrs. Connolly
arranj^ed for speech therapy at the
New York Hospital.
About two years ajfo, the Co7i-nolly
family moved to Lynbrook.
Stephen, who had poor balance,
poor coordination and speech diffi-culty,
was enrolled in the pre-school
class at the Cerebral Palsy Cen-ter
for five mornings a week. Ar-rangements
were made for him to
be given- phyjsituil thor«ipy and

As Stephen has a normal I.Q.,
a great 'deal of thought wa.s given
to the best procedine for his edu-cation.
It was taken into considera-tion
that, allhouKh Ik; could do
almost anything a non-handicapped
child could do and had the men-tal
capacity to learn, it would take
him much longer to learn to write,
for example. Because of poor breatli
control, his speech was slow and

M«idieal Department of the Cerebral
Palsy Center was that Stephen be
enrolled in the Cerebral Palsy
School.

His parents first realized that his coordination was poor when he was a few months old.
It wasn't until he was fourteen months old that his handicap was diagnosed as Cerebral Palsy,
caused by lack of oxygen during the first hour of life after a prolonged and difficult delivery.
As the Connolly family lived in :
class. In additi(m to the usual cm-ricidum,
he receives physical and
speech therapy. The school teacher
and speech -therapist coordinate
tlieir efforts in their program for
S t e p h c> n ' s overall develoiiment.
Since attending school and being
with children on his own level. Ste-phen
has matured emotionally and
is doing well in the basic subjects
of reading, writing and arithmetic.
His walking has improxcd and he
expresses his ideas vocally as his
speech improves.
Ridcii Tricycle
J^'or recreation, Stephen rides a
tricycle well and is learning to ride
a two wheel bicycle. He does not
lack conu>unjoushii> as he has a
six year old sister and two broth-

IF He Lived Next Door
...Would You Care?
On this page, you can read the story of Stephen Connolly,
one of our Lynbrook children who is the unfortunate victim of
cerebral palsy. If he lived next door to you, and M-as your neigh-bor,
would you care . . . and when an appeal is made to you for
contributions would you give . . . and give?
