The season to be jolly and
gift giving has long gone
with a few winter's blasts;
and, less welcome gifts of
sniffles, ^coughs, aches, and
pains have arrived.
Thoughts sometimes turn
(among old timers) to
friendly words, free pills,
and HOUSE CALLS.
Shortly after moving from
bustling, busy days in
Brooklyn to East Rocka-way,
ye historian noted that
"number 2" son seemed
glassy-eyed and had a fever.
In a panic, a neighbor was
called and the name of Dr.
Arthur D. Jaques was given.
Less than an hour after the
call was made, a dignified
gentleman with greying hair
and a clipped moustache was
at the door, carrying a small
black bag. He greeted the
young patient with a smile
and a cheerful, "Well, let's
see what we have here,
sonny,"
The diagnosis was "scarlet
fever." Ye historian had read
Louisa M, Alcott's book
"Little Women" many times
and knew that Beth, the
youngest sister, had died
after a siege with dreaded
scarlet fever.
"Don't worry, mother,"
the doctor said opening his
black bag and selecting one
of the many carefully
arranged bottles inside.
"Have him take two of these
every three hours, and keep
in touch with me." Then he
tacked a sign reading "QUA-A
Country
Doctor
RANTINED" on the front
door. Packing up his bag.
Dr. Jaques then left the
house and walked to the
curb where he had parked
his bicycle. It was summer
and he was off in a flash to
ease the pain of another
suffering patient.
Dr. Jaques had his office
and home on Atlantic Ave.
at the site of the present East
Rockaway Nursing Home.
He sang in the choir of
Bethany Church, where his
wife was active in the Wom-en's
League. His son, the late
Dr. Allan Jaques, taught
Sunday School and daugh-ter,
Margaret was confirmed
there. In 1948 Dr. Jaques
also headed The Board of
Health for Nassau County,
and was once selected as
"General Practitioner of
New York State" for that
year.
