East Rockaway Village Board Report

William P. Geier (left) presents a Citation to Kevin Barry
and James RusseU, Co-Captains of the 1988-89 Lynbrook
Owls football team, while Coach Joseph Knoll (right) looks

Scholarship Fund
East Rockaway's 21st
Century Scholarship Fund is
unique in that it allows
students to «am "shares
stock" in this special fund by
earning top grades in their
academic courscwork in
Grades 9 through 12. The
scholarship was created last
year by Superintendent of
Schools Robert Parry who
solicited corporate contribu-tions
from community mer-chants
and from businesses
which work with the school
district.
For June, 1988 graduates
each grade of A was worth
a full share of $30.00 and
each grade of B+ was valued
at $20.00. Awards were pres-ented
at graduation to 43
graduates in amounts which
ranged from $20 to $380.
More than $4,000 was con-tributed
in this first year and
the district has set a goal of
$8,000 for the June, 1989
graduating class.
The philosophy of our
21st Century Scholarship
Fund is to emphasize to
students that work in high
school is an investment in
the future. Good grades
earned in ninth and tenth
grades earn money which
will be awarded at gradua-tion.
Everv student has the
opportunity to build shares
in this fund. Our overall goal
is to develop fully educated
citizens with personal and
career objectives. We realize,
however, that young people
often need more tangible
incentives. This fund pro-vides
that as well as personal
contact with business world
concepts such as investment,
earnings, stock value, and
shares.
The school district will
soon be approaching busi-nesses,
Service agencies and
indivduals to request fund-ing
for the 21 St Century
Scholarship Fund. The
value of each share of stock
for June-graduates wttl -be^
determined by the sucess of
our fund-raising.
