Huckleberry
Frolic
he sixties, there would be no
Museum today. The 1688
building would have been
pushed to the ground and
history would have been
destroyed. If it hadnt been
for the PEOPLE who res-tored
the building and
gathered local memorabelis,
the cases would remain
empty. If it hadn't been for
"We the People", made up
of many organizations,
churches, entertainers and
school children there would
never have been the First
Huckleberry Frolic, and the
museum could never have
grown into the fine show
place it is today.
Wit]^ the assistance of the
staff i^f the Cultural Educa-tion
Center in Albany, work
kits are being distributed to
teachers in all New York
State Schools. The books
are entitled, "Learning How
to Live With Others".
Museum is also receiving
posters, "We the People^
buttons to be given out or
award and the committee
has the possibility (almost
certain) of receiving a Float
from Albany for the Frolic
parade. These are being sent
to our Village to remind the
PEOPLE of what our fore-fathers
have done for us.
Perhaps a bit more flag wav-ing
can be done this year
during the Frolic as "We the
People" have had the privi-lege
through the "Bill of
Rights," to be heard and in
some small way tried to live
up to the dreams of those
early founding Fathers.
WASHINGTON VISITORS. Congressman Ray McGrath
(R-Valley Stream), far left, met recently with Lynbrook Boy
Scout Troop #214 in the Capitol Building in Washington,
D.C. The Scouts, under the leadership of Benjamin "Bud"
Meyer, third from left, were in Washington visiting various
sites including the White House and the Smithsonian
museums.
Crime Prevention Tips
for Spring
With the advent of spring
weather herp in Lynbrook,
officer Fuskwinkel of the
Lynbrook Police Depart-ment
urges residents to be on
the alert for suspicious i^r-sons
walking or driving
through their neighbor-hoods.
When residents are
working outdoors doing
spring clean-up and garden-ing
they need to be partic-ularly
careful to lock all
doors to their home. During
past years all areas of Nassau
have been plaqued by "gyp-sies"
who travel throughout
the United States conduct-ing
residential burglaries.
According to Officier
Fred Fusswinkel, the thieves
usually travel in teams of
two, and sometimes even
have small children with
them. Popular scams these
individuals use to gain
entrance to homes are to
knock on a homeowners
door and ask if thev can use
the telephone, or to allow
their child to use the
bathroom. While one person
is distracting the resident of
the house, the other jp^rson
or persons is helping himself
to Items.
Another tactic used by the
thieves is to engage a resi-dent
who may be outside
working in conversion, while
one thief is talking with the
resident, the other thief is
entering the house through
an unlocked door.
Chief Lauriano and
Officer Fusswinkel urge all
residents to report suspi-cious
persons and vehicles to
the Lynbrook police at 599-
3300. When reporting a
suspicious person or vehicle,
try to remember as good a
description as possible, not-ing
such things as clothing
type and color, race, height,
hair color, and in the case
of vehicles, license plate
number.
