FIGHTING THE WAR AGAINST DRUGS. East Rockaway
Village Trustee Charles Formont (left), who also serves as
Chairman of the East Rockaway Kiwanis Club Coloring
Book Committee, presents "Just Say No!" coloring books

The club distributed more than 1,000 to the five ele-mentary
schools in the East Rockaway area.
Anily Durso
Andy Durso
By Mildred Roemer
Andy Durso took his last
bow from the stage of Life
at his home in Valatie, N.Y.,
on November 25. His 66th
birthday would have been on
the 27th. Andy had suffered
from Lou Gehrig's disease
for several years. He was a
veteran of World War 2,
serving in the Pacific area.
Andy grew up in East
Rockaway. He attended the
Rhame Avenue School
where he was called upon
oftem to take part in school
plays. He also starred in the
P.T.A.'s Pageant, "The His-tory
of East Rockaway,"
written by Mrs. Dennis
Murray. It was not only
presented in the schools, but
on East Rockaway Day in
the 1939 Worlds Fair. In
E.R. High School he had the
opportunity to use his tal-ents,
especially in Rock/Ri-valry,
He had the honor of
being the first one on stage
• at the first Rock Rivalry held
in the then new high school
and again was the first on
stage when the East Rocka-way
High School Alumni
Association presented their
50th Anniversary, Rock
Rivalry review. On stage
Andy walked with a cane,
but directed the opening
songs by waving his arms
and mouthing the words
since his speach had already
become impaired.
As a community service,
Andy served as Master of
Ceremonies and drum major
of the parade during the
annual Huckleberry Frolics,
the event that raises funds
for the Grist Mill Museum.
Many will remember him
leading the^ parade, and
singing lustily, "When the
Saints Come Marching In"
along with the grade school
bands.
Andy was a great baseball
fan of the St. Louis Cardi-nals
and managed to be
taken to one of their games
last Fall. When in East
Rockaway, he was president
of the Lynbrook East
Rockaway Lions Club. He
had retired in Valatie, N.Y.,
and the local church groups
there built a ramp at his
home for his wheelchair,
assiked in obtaining a lift for
his car, and provided other
conveniences.
Following Andy's retire-ment
before moving upstate,
he gave much of his time to
Bethany Church where he
had previously served as Sun-day
School Superintendent,

said holiday.

pickups on Monday,
December 26, 1988, and
January 2, 1989.
3. There will be no BULK

help to fill those barrels with
new un-wrapped toys. The
