The title of the article
which appeared in the July
23, 1953 issue ol "Ihe
Leader" read, "Stainless
Steel Restaurant Is Just Dog
Wagon to Greis." It seems
that a restaurant owner
hired an attorney to plead
his case before the Lyn-brook
Village Board of,
Frustees, asking that he be
allowed to "establish a stain-less
steel restaurant on Mer-rick
Road, diagonally oppo-site
the Lynbrook Theater
on the corner of a field now
used for municipal park-ing."
One can only imagine
what Five Corners looked
like with a field nearby.
rhe attorney described
the "stainless steel restuar-ant"
as a "$100,000 ultra-deluxe
diner", however, it
turned out that Mayor Greis
explained that not only was
the proposed location a vio-lation
of the Village Zoning
Ordinance, but that the
Ordinance also prohibited
such "lunch wagons" on
"aesthetic grounds."
I he attorney then claimed
that this section of Village
Ordinance was "unconstitu-tional",
adding that this was
"not an ordinary lunch
wagon"~it was a "restaurant."
Mayor Greis said that the
attorney did indeed make
"the dog wagon sound
glamorous," but that he did
not see how the "Zoning

Francis X. Becker Jr., son
of former Lynbrook mayor
and presiding Supreme
Court Justice Francis X.
Becker, Sr., has been named
chairman of the Lynbrook
Independent Party's newly
formed board of governors.
Becker, 36, who is married
•/vith three children, comes
from a family of long time
public servants. He is the
brother of Assemblyman
Greg Becker and grandson
of former Congressman
Frank J. Becker. As a life-long
resident of Lynbrook,
Becker has an acute feel for
the needs of the community.
He was there, although a
teenager at the time, during
the Independent Party's
rescue of Lynbrook during
the late 1960's, when the vil-lage
was being neglected by
the party in power.
"I believe in Lynbrook,
said Becker, I always have
and always will. We live in
a great village, but we can
make it better; better for us,
our children and grand-children.
The Lynbrook
Independent Party will once
again save our village from
excessive taxation. A thirty-eight
percent increase in vil-lage
taxes is only two short
years - with inflation low and
under control - is simply
ridiculous. We need to have
clean streets, our leaves
picked up and our roads
plowed when it snows. And
we must make our business
community vibrant again.
Becker continued, "I
believe the newly formed
board of governors will act
as a welcomed addition to
assist an already impressive
group of party officers. We
will work together toward
one goal: bringing the resi-dents
of our village the kind
of government they
deserve."
Independent Party Presi-dent
Bill Hendrick praised
Becker as a true Lynbrook
person, and a leader, who
comes from a family that
played a major role in mak-ing
Lynbrook the pride of
Long Island from 1967 until
the early 1980's.
"I learned a set of values
from my parents; values
which I never forgotten and
will always cherish," Becker
said. '*I was taught that when
you see a wrong you try to
right it. And when you can
do something for your fellow
man or the community you
don't sit idly and just watch
or complain. You get out
there and do something
about it. As long as I can
breathe I will continue to
fight for the best interests of
our village and its residents.
