Turning Back The Clock
1688-198
by Mildred Roemer
I haven't a calendar tor
1688 so can't checlc the
actual date, but it was in
1688 that one Joseph Havi-land
received a grant from
"ye Town of Hempstead" to
build a mill on the swamps
and streams of Rockaway.
Of course the power to give
the grant came from our
then King in far away
England.
It was more than two
years ago that grandiose
plans were being formed for
the BIG birthday celebra-tion
of our Grist Mill Muse-um...
it seemed so far away,
but here it is and some of
those plans have been com-pleted
and are already being
carried out. Luckily we
ordered our anniversary
plates, designed by High
School art teacher John
Bishop, to be manufactured
at that time as prices kept
going up. One hundred of
the limited edition have
already been sold, with a
hundred more to go. At
present they are available in
the Village Hall. When the
Museum opens they will be
sold there also.
Plans for a three-day
celebration along with the
Huckleberry Frolic were
discussed and former Mayor
Ted Reinhard will master-mind
it. Not an easy task,
but now he'll do it with
volunteer HELP! A photo
book telling of how and
when the mill was moved,
restored, and became a trea-sure
trove for East Rocka-way
history is well under-way.
Research from writings
by the late W. Wesley Hill
and former history teacher
Douglas Sackman will bear
for its authenticity. Putting
it together are the Arthur K.
Roemers, John Bishop,
Thomas Carty, Raymond

remarks to the 800 plus who
gathered for the induction.
"The Challenge for the bal-ance
of this decade, there-fore,
will be the preservation
of that opportunity and
promise which this County
offers through controlled
growth and protection of
our natural resources and
suburban values. We must
address our weaknesses and
build upon our strengths.
We have reached the time
for decision. The future of
our County and the Island is
in our hands....we cannot
afford to let that future slip
away through inaction and
complacency."
Joining Gulotta for the
formal ceremonies were
(from left to right), his wife
Betsy and their three child-ren
Thomas, Christopher
and Elizabeth.
Remaiks of County Executive
Thomas S. Gulotta
Reverend Cfergy, my col-leagues
in government,
friends, honored guests, all.
Thank you for the honor,
th privilege, and the oppor-tunity
to serve the residents
of this great county. By a
record breaking plurality,
the residents of Nassau
County have expressed their
support for the policies of
this administration. 1 shall
do all within my power to
justify that confidence.
No individual is an island
unto themselves. We are all
the products of the efforts of
many people....just as each
of you have enriched my life
and have played a part in
making today possible. I
thank you for your support,
but more importantly, 1
t h a n k you for your
friendship.
A special thank you to our
county chairman, Joe Mon-dello,
who, despite his many
responsibilities through his
dynamic leadership, coordi-nated
the campaigns of all
the candidates. 1 thank, as
well, members of the execu-tive
committee, the commit-teemen
and the rxiany volun-ters
for their guidance, their.
