Oh well, the hog guessing
was different from 1986
anyway.!

October -- time of pump-kins,
falling leaves, and blue
skies. So it was in East
Rockaway 100 years ago,
and hopefully, it will be the
same in 1986.
Thanks to Tom Carty,
teacher in Centre Avenue
School, who has researched
and given his students
assignments on our local
history, ye old historian will
strive to do sorne research
too from their reports on
articles in the old "South
Shore OBSERVER."
Although the weather
may be the same as they had
years ago, activities in the
Village were quite different.
For example: "Leonard C.
Smith's hog-guessing con-test
was one of the most lar-gely
attended of the season.
One hundred guesses were
put in a box at SOc each. The
hog weighed 466 pounds
and was won by Cal, Simon-son
& Co. and George W.
Smith & Co., who guessed
the exact weight. Capt.
Henry Oakley, B.T. Smith
and James Pearsall were the
judges."
" T h e S m i t h / A b r a ms
divorce case engaged the
attention of Judge Cullen on
Monday. Mrs. Abrams said
she wanted alimony, but the
Judge said she could not
have it until her appeal had
been settled. George A.
Mott for plaintiff said he
desired to withdraw the
notice of appeal in the
divorce suit already filed, on
the grounds that he had no
more money to pay the
expenses of the appeal.
The East Rockaway
Board of Education reminds
all registered voters of the
district of the important
c o m m u n i t y r e f e r e n d um
scheduled for Tuesday,
October 14th.
Building a new Rhame
Avenue School requires a
p o s i t i v e vote for a
$3,576,589 bond issue this
Tuesday at the East Rocka-way
High School Gymna-sium
between the hours of 6
AM a n d 9 PM.
Preliminary plans for the
new building have been
approved by the NVS Edu-cation
Department, The
state also made clear that
our two elementary school
sites are much too small to
consider either consolida-tion
into one school or sel-ling
off part of the school
site at Rhame Avenue.
The Board of Education
carefully investigated the
alternatives before present-ing
the current proposal.
Using the current Alt-house
Wing and adding a
new section to that 30 year
old structure would have
resulted in a loss of $580,000
in state building aid.
The totally new school.
Lynbrook Scholars
Honored
Lynbrook High School is
very pleased to announce
that five of its students have
been recognized as Com-mended
Students by the
National Merit Scholarship
C o r p o r a t i o n (NMSC).
These students are Edward
Arnold, Erin Doherty, Wil-l
i am F e n r i c h , Theresa
McDougal, and Lourdes
Talvey. They all performed
well enough on the Prelimi-nary
Scholastic Aptitude
Test/National Merit Scho-larship
Qualifying Test to
place them in the top 50,000
of more than one million
participants across the
nation. This ranks them in
the top 5 % in the country.
These students are not
only exemplary in their
classwork and test perfor-mance,
they are also very
involved in the extracurricu-lar
life of the high school. For example, Edward
Arnold and Lourdes Talvey
are top notch musicians in
t h e school o r c h e s t r a,
Theresa McDougal is a star
member of mathletes, Erin
Doherty is on the staff of the
a w a r d - w i n n i n g school
newspaper. The Horizon,
and William Fenrich is pres-ident
of the National Honor
Society.
An officer of the NMSC,
which conducts the pro-gram,
stated, "The very high
test performance of the
young men and women who
are honored as Commended
Students in -the Merit Pro-gram
is indicative of excep-tional
scholastic ability. We
hope that NMSC's recogni-tion
of these high school
students will increase their
motivation to make the best
use ol their talents and to
develop the skills that will be
needed by the future leaders
of our nation. Being named
a Commended Student in
this keen competition is a
credit to these young citizens
