Frolic
Update
By Mildred Roemer
certain to be a few snacks
left at the booths, or bring
along a sandwich, but don't
miss It! After the audience
has enjoyed all of the energy
of the sixties on stage, feet
may start tapping and there
will be a square dance coun-try
music hour sponsored by
the Cultural Arts Council.
Stay all day and you will
be assured of a full night's
sleep later!
The Huckleberry Frolic
program now being final-ized
by the Frolic and enter-tainment
committees, prom-ises
something exciting for
everyone. In the near future
you will be able to scan the
entire series ofeventsin your
Observer and use it for a
guide on June 21st in Mem-orial
Park.
The parade will begin at
10 a.m. at the Main Street
FMre House, with school
band director Karl San-
/enbach leading the grade
school bands. Mrs. New
York State, Vonabelle
Sherman ol East Rockaway,
will ride in state wearing her
queenly crown, while Yogi
the bear will strut alongside.
The parade will end in
Memorial Park where the
objective for the Frolic
stands - our Grist Mill
Museum. Booths for games
and food will be set up in the
park and continuous enter-tainment
will be offered. A
big change in the program
this year is that during the
usual "do-nothing" part of
past Frolics, at 6 p.m. a per-formance
will be given by
the "Spectacular Sixties,"
one ol four great groups of
Fast Rockaway High
School classes that appeared
in the recent Rock Rivalry
5()th anniversary program in
the H.S. If this might be
your dinner hour, there are
Miss Harriet Nixon, one
of East Rockaway's most
l o v e d and r e s p e c t ed
teachers, will be retiring
after a distinguished career at
both Rhame Avenue and
Centre Avenue Schools. In
tribute and recognition of
her years of dedicated teach-ing,
she was honored by par-ents
of both schools on
Thursday evening, June 5th,
at the Centre Avenue School
Concert. Mrs. Lenore Hick-ham
and Mr. Richard
Alhecht, the PTA Presi-dents,
were on hand to
thank her and wish her well.
They presented her with a
beautiful plaque and a bou-quet
of silk roses.
The inimitable Elaine
Morano, who had taught for
many years with Miss
Nixon, spoke of her out-standing
qualities as an edu-cator,
her sensitivity to her
students' needs, her sense of
humor, warmth and genuine
love of children. Then, much
to the delight of the large
audience, Mrs. Morano
introduced Pamela Highton
Castellano, one of Miss
Nixon's grown-up alumni,
to reminisce and share her
thoughts about one of her
favorite teachers. During
the musical part of the even-ing,
the children of the cho-rus
also spoke and sang their
special salute. Heather Hal-stend,
one of Miss Nixon's
3rd graders, seemed to
express everyone's senti-ments
when she said "A
teacher tfue - a teacher ever
~ Our love to you, forever."
Miss Nixon will also be
honored by The East Rock-
