SENATOR SKELOS HONORS OUTSTANDING
SENIOR CITIZEN. On May 6, 1986, New York State
celebrated Senior Citizen's Day, and In Albany Senator
Dean Skelos announced that Dr. Joseph A. Kuhn of Long
Beach had been chosen by the New York Senate to receive
the "Outstanding Contribution By a Senior Citizen" award.

You Can Help Peter
Peter Henry, a young
Lynbrook resident who
suffers from leukemia, has
been selected as the benfi-ciary
of this year's Jim
Jensen benefit softball
game, which will take place
at Greis Park on Tuesday
evening, June 17th. The
announcement was made by
Dick Flynn, Lynbrook's
75th Anniversary Softball
Chairperson, at a special
magic show held in Peter's
honor.
Peter, who is S'A years
old, must undergo a bone
marrow transplant, an
enormously expensive sur-gical
procedure. The trans-plant
is to be performed at
Johns Hopkins Hospital in
Maryland, oije of only two
hospitals that performs this
type of surgical procedure.
which takes 6 to 8 weeks to
complete. Until such time as
bed space becomes available
at John Hopkins, Peter is
undergoing Chemotherapy
for his illness.
At the special magic show
last week, Peter and his fam-ily
were entertained by "The
Great Rossini" (otherwise
known as Keith Rossein)
and by "The Little Rossini"
(Keith Rossein'sson, Craig).
Peter and his brothers
laughed aloud at the magical
tricks. They especially
enjoyed the "Cookie Mons-ter"
trick in which Cookie
Monster disappeared from
the "cookie bakery" only to
reappear later...inside a
piano.
According to Peter's par-ents,

The East Rockaway
Board of Education held a
community forum on Mon-day,
May 19 to receive tax-payer
input on the disposi-tion
of the Rhame Avenue
School, which was des-troyed
by fire in January of
this year.
More than 50 people were
on hand to hear the presen-tation
of President John
Van Houten and to look at
p r o p o s e d drawings of
options open to the district.
President Van Houten
a d v i s e d the residents
assembled that the district
has three major options: res-tore
the 1926 building to its
former use, demolish the
1926 building and retain the
Althouse Avenue wing, or
demolish the entire structure
and rebuild. Mr. Van
Hotiteh indictated that the
Board has rejected plans to
merely restore the 1926
building, stating that the
cost involved would approx-imatethecost
of buildingan
entirely new structure.
S u p e r i n t e n d e n t of
S c h o o l s Robert Parry
reported that it is impossible
to estimate the amount of
money the District will
receive from its insurance
company. Adjusters are cur-rently
making a detailed
report of the damage done
to the school, and Board
members expect a final
report in the near future.
The total cost of restora-tion
or rebuilding could be
as much as $5 million,
according to the Board. This
figure would be offset by
insurance proceeds, state aid
(currently 49%) and credits
from unused contracts
approved through the 1984
bond r e s o l u t i o n . Any
remaining funds would be
raised either through the
yearly budget or through a
bond referendum.
Mr. Van Houten stressed
that the Board was seeking
as much community input as
possible. Another forum
will be held in June, and the
Board is considering a ques-tionnaire
that may be mailed
to every resident of the Dis-trict
to solicit their views and
opinions on the subject.
The Board also investi-gated
the possibility of creat-ing
one kindergarten to
grade 3 school, and one
school for grades 4 through
6. This plan would require
in-district transportation.
which would not be funded
through state aid.
There will be much dis-cussion
of this topic in the
weeks and months to come.
The Observer has offered its
pages once again as a forum
for the discussion of the
issue (see Editorial page 2).
Community comment is
encouraged and welcome,
and watch each week for
more information about
Rhame Avenue School.
