East Rockaway Sets
Village Tax Rate
adopted a budget that keeps
services high, while minimiz-ing
the tax bite to the grea-test
extent practicable."
Despite skyrocketting
i n s u r a n c e p r e m i u m s,
increased garbage disposal
costs, and newly negotiated
union salary increases, the
East Rockaway Village
Board has passed a budget
for the 1986-87 calender
year which calls for a 5.7 per
cent tax increase.
The 5.7% increase, which
represents a rise in the tax
rate from $5. 28 to $5.55 per
$100 of assessed valuation,
comes despite a 100% rise in
the cost of liability insurance
from $ 125,000 to $250,000; a
20% increase in "tipping
fees", the fee the Village pays
to dump collected refuse,
from $220,000 to $265,000;
and the enactment of a con-tract
with the Civil Service
Employees Association
which calls for a 7% salary
increase for Village workers
in the eoming year.
At the budget hearing,
where the proposed budget
was unanimously adopted
by the Board of Trustees,
Mayor Reinhard noted that
the Board had worked "dili-gently
to keep taxes down.
Circumstances beyond our
control, primarily the insu-rance
crisis, necessitated
that the Board put in many
hours of hard work in an
effort to find ways to lessen
the tax burden as much as
possible."
Trustee Anthony Santino
noted that the Board had
labored long over the budget
in an effort to keep its com-mitment
to provide the best
possible services at the low-est
possible cost. "Despite
staggering increases in insu-rance
and other essential
items, the Board has
