Report
by Annette Ling
The good news at the
Lynbrook Board of Trustees
Meeting held on Monday,
Dec. 2, 1985 at 8 p.m. was
. that the Village of Lynbrook
has a tentative price of
$85,000 for the LILCO light-ing
system in Lynbrook
which will mean a savings in
user costs of $120,000 per
year according to Mayor
Bill Geier who announced
the purchase offer. How-ever,
the amount is tentative
because LILCO insists that
Lynbrook must publish bid
specifications for the light-ing
system and accept bids.
Lynbrook has suggested this
because of problems they
have had in the past in their
municipality dealings. This
is also because of state laws
mandating the bidding
procedure as well. As a
result of the survey of Lyn-brook's
lighting system done
by John Cameron & Co., the
Lynbrook Board of Trustees
feels that it would be much
more advantageous to buy
the system because LILCO's
a n n o u n c e m e n t that it
intends to go out of the
street lighting business alto-gether.
By the purchase of
the LILCO street lights.
Mayor Geier hopes to reha-bilitate
the lighting aJong
Sunrise Highway, Atlantic
Ave., Broadway, and Mer-rick
Rd. A date of Jan. 6,
1986 was set for the formal
Bid Opening.
Earlier in the Board meet-ing
bids were opened for
surplus Sale of Equipment
such as Rifles, Shot Guns,
and Vehicles with the final
bids to be determined after
study by Police Chief Frank
Kehr in the matter of the
guns and on the surplus veh-icles
by D.P.W. Supt. Jack
Woessner. One extra matter
came up when one of the
bidders for the DPW vehi-cles
asked for further con-sultation
and clarification
with the DPW, on the bid
wording and specifications.

A special orie-night event
of selected highlights of
Rock Rivalry entrances
"through the years" to be
performed by past graduates
from each decade is being
explored for possible pres-entation
in February or
April.
"We have heard from
groups from the classes of
1979, 1975, 1969, and 1956,"
said School Board member.
Richard Meagher, "and
individuals who range all the
way back to the very first
Rock Rivalry." Meagher is
serving on a Board commit-tee,
along with Board Presi-dent
John van Houten and
Board Vice President Elaine
Boll, all three of whom are
graduates of East Rockaway
High School, to "sound out"
the degree of community
interest in such an event,
Ed Power, Class of 1975,
indicated strong support for
such an event was evidenced
at his class's 10th anniver-
..saiY-rcunitiniigld durinje^e
Thanksgiving weekend.
"We need to hear from
more groups and more indi-viduals,"
said Meagher.
"The 50th Anniversary of
Rock Rivalry deserves spe-cial
attention."

HERJC Damaged By Fire
The Hewlett East Rocka-way
Jewish Center was
moderately damaged by a
fire that raged out of control
last Tuesday, December 3.
The fire which forced the
evacuation of approxi-mately
fifty students from
the school adjacent to the
temple, and damaged a stor-age
area above the kitchen
as well as the roof, was
brought under control in
about 35 minutes.
The East Rockaway fire
department responded with
8 pieces of equipment, and
assistance was received from
the Oceanside fire depart-ment
who sent an additional
3 pieces of equipment. In all
about 100 fire fighters
fought the blaze.
Because Chief Cittadino
could not immediately
determine the cause of the
fire the Nassau County fire
marshal was called to the
scene. The cause of the fire is
still under investigation.
The rabbi and his assist-ants
were able to move the
Torah to a safe location, and
efforts were under way to
reopen the school and to
have the temple ready for
two weddings that were
scheduled for the weekend.
The East Rockaway fire
department remained on the
scene for about four hours
to assist the marshal with his
investigation and to insure
the fire was completely^
extinguished. There were no'
injuries as a result of the fire.
Second Asaistant Chief Shelton surveys the damage to the
Temple after the fire was extinguished.
