Juniors Assist Evacuated
Soon after the local radio
station announced that
Lynbrook High School
would become an evacua-tion
center for the evacuated
residents of Long Beach,
Oceanside and East Rocka-way,
members of the Lyn-brook
Junior Fire Depart-ment,
on their own, were
gathering together to assist
these displaced people.
With the permission of
their parents, six members
proceeded to the high school
in unilorm under the com-mand
ol Junior Lieutenants
Eddie Ryan and Stephen
Pollackov. Upon arrival the
Juniors immediately began
to assist the arriving evacu-ated
and direct them into the
school.
Wearing turnout coats
and raincoats the Juniors
helped, outside in the rain
unloading,the county buses
bringing the evacuees. They
helped unload the cars of
arriving evacuees and car-ried
their luggage and
belongings into the school.
They carried many a young
child into the school to
safely. 1 hey even carried

s i x t y years old and,
a l t h o u g h the District
recently approved a $3.5
million bond issue last year,
no money was available to
rehabilitate the playground
except for lighting and
blacktop," said Skelos, who
brought more than $80,-
000,000 in state aid to Ninth
Senatorial District Schools
this year.
"East Rockaway is a very
small district with little tax
relief from business. The
brunt of the tax burden has
fallen on the shoulders of
our struggling middle class
homeowners. We are very
concerned for the safety of
our children in regard to our
playground as it now stands.
S e v e r a l c h i l d r e n have
already sustained injuries
this year and we would like
to see this dangerous
equipment dismantled. We
are appreciative of Senator
Skelos' assistance in this
m a t t e r , " said Marilyn
Arguafredda, Vice Presi-dent
of the Centre Avenue
PTA.
"The renewal of the Com-puter
Upgrade project at
$20,000 was welcome news.
Outstanding news was the
$20,000 grant for school
playground rehabilitation.
Senator Skelos' sponsorship
of these grants and his sup-port
of the East Rockaway
School District is most
appreciated by the Board of
Education and the entire
school community of East
Rockaway," said Robert
Parry, Superintendent of
Schools, East Rockaway.
"Being able to assist our
schools is one of the most
rewarding experiences I've
had as a legislator. As Presi-dent
Kennedy said, 'Our
progress as a nation can be
no swifter than our progress
in education,' " said Skelos.
Census Campaigns Announced
The Rev. William Sin-gleton,
Pastor of St. Ray-mond's
Church, 263 Atlan-tic
Avenue, East Rockaway,
and the Rev. Edwin Collins,
Pastor of Our Lady of
Lourdes Church in Mal-verne,
have announced a
census campaign for their
respective parishes, which
will be conducted from Sat-urday,
October 19 through
November 3 for Our Lady of
Lourdes, and on November
2,3,9 and 10 for St. Ray-monds.
The census will
involve making direct con-tact
with all baptized
Catholics in the parish area,
through a door-to-door
campaign. Parish workers
will be commissioned to
represent the pastor in this
campaign, and they will be
carrying special identifica-tion
cards.
The census has several
spiritual and practical objec-tives.
Besides reaching out
to provide a visible presence
in the community. Father
Singleton hopes to be able to
gather vital information
about each Catholic family.
This will greatly assist him in
providing a meaningful pas-toral
ministry and help him
plan for the parish's future
in an intelligent and knowl-edgeable
way.
Before proceeding with
the door-to-door phase of
ithe campaign, the parish will
contact known and regis-tered
parishioners by mail.
It is hoped that most Cathol-ics
will be reached in this
manner. Those families who
return their census forms
will not receive a visit from a
volunteer worker. Volunteer
workers will visit those
households for which no
census form has been
returned in order to deter-mine
whether any Catholics
are living at these addresses.
Mr. Paul Keuhn, who is
serving as lay chairperson
for St. Raymonds, and Mr.
Andrew Wallace, serving lor
Our Lady of Lourdes, have
stressed that there is no
intent whatsoever to solicit
funds, to proselytize, or to
invade anyone's privacy.
They have pointed out that
this outreach campaign is an
invitation to Catholics to
participate freely in this
important task of mutual
communication between
parish and family. Because
parish communities are in
constant flux as families
move in and out of the area,
they have stated that most
Churches find it necessary to
conduct a thorough census
every 10-12 years.
Parishioners of St. Ray-mond's
who would like to
volunteer to help conduct
this census campaign are
asked to contact Mr. Bob
Chojnacki (593-7325) who is
serving as chairperson of the
Volunteer Committee, while
those in Our Lady of
Lourdes Parish should con-tact
Mrs. Ernest Wendt at
599-4545.
Assemblyman Gregory Becker recently congratulated Peter
Zarb of Lynbrook, the silver medalist in the wheelchair
Table Tennis Competition at the European Sports Festival
held in Vienna, Austria. Assemblyman Becker has high
praise for Zarba, who also was the 1984 and 1985 men's
national champion as well as part of the 1985 men's doubles
championship team. Zarba has been working with Becker
and the Lynbrook Post Offlce to have a wheelchair ramp
installed.
