LHS Music Alumni To Present Recital
Many of those who
attended services in the tittle
Chapel on Main Street were
^ di^wn to the Village by their
fuve of the sea. Some had
small boats for Sunday sail-ing
and others went in for
shipbuilding. In a story in
the November 1882 "South
Shore Observer" 6th grader
Brian Stone studied the
microfilmed copy and gave
this report of Life Saving
Services and Coast Guard:
Quite recently the sloop
"Ida Rhame" while attempt-ing
to go out of East Rock-away
Inlet and tacking, went
ashore on the west-end side
of the inlet. The sea was
rough, and the sloop having
cargo aboard, bumped heav-ily',
and at the time, the see-thing
sea made a complete
breach over her, compelling
her crew to seek the rigging
for safety. The sloop
remained on the shore for 23
hours without assistance
having been offered or ren-dered
by Captain John H.
Abrams, Keeper of Station
#34 in whose district the
sloop had been wrecked.
Captain H.M. Johnson,
Keeper of Station #33, with
his crew-seeing no assist-ance
from station #34 was
offered—by their effort
alone, hauled the sloop off
the beach and relieved its
from its perilous situation.
Captain Johnson and his
crew have the warmest and
best thanks from Mr.
Samuel Rhame, the owner
of the sloop and who
declared this publically to
acknowledge their timely
and valuable services, par-ticularly
so, when the sloop
was outside of their district.
It was also Captain John-son's
crew that hauled the
"Annie Smith" of Freeport
off the bar last week though
the other crew soon
arrived."
There is no photo of the
"Ida Rhame" in the Grist
Mill Museum, but one of a
true "Mystery Ship, the
Sarah Boyd." According to
the late Captain Lou Pear-sail,
himself a keeper of a
Coast Guard Station, the
"Sarah Boyd" was the last,
and largest ship ever built in
East Rockaway. It was fin-ished
by a cooperation that
included Sam Rhame and
members of the Fenton fam-ily.
"It was never registered,"
exjjlained Captain Pear-sall,"
and on its maiden
voyage was lost at sea with
no trace of crew or ship, it
just vanished.
A large photo of the
"Sarah Boyd" hung in the
living room of Del Denton's
house on Denton Avenue.
Members of the Museum
committee were given per-mission
to make a copy of
the picture, and that is how
East Rockaway at least has a
visual reminder of the mys-tery
ship.
On Wednesday evening,
