Skelos Defeats Bermanr^^^'Xl^r
Congressman Nonnm Lent Judge Ray Harrington
In the election held
November 6th, 1984, the
voters turned out in large
numbers and gave President
Reagan the largest number
' of electoral college votes
ever given an American
president. The polls held up
and Mr. Reagan defeated
Mr. Mondale by 18 percen-tage
polls in the popular
vote.
In our local contest the
greatest upset was the deleat
ol State Senator Carol
Berman, the Democrat Irom
Senator Dean Skelos AssemUymai Greg Bedter Congressman Riq'McGnith
Local Folks In Silent "Flickers"
Commuters in Lynbrook,
dashing through Saperstein
Plaza, might give a passing
glance towards the hand-some
statue of a World War
1 Doughboy. The man who
posed for the statue was one
of Lynbrooks own: Col.,
"Jack" Blesser, whom many
will still remember with
affection. However, he was
not only a model for the
World War I figure, (a war
in which he served), but he
was one of several local
amature performers who
acted in silent movies filmed'
in East Rockaway.
The photo shows Blesser
in duck trousers, trying to
induce a minister to come
into the 1915 car to perforhi
a marriage ceremony, after
which "The Honeymoon-ers"
(the name of the film),
might escape from parential
objections. The minister
was played by Charles Kent
and the lovely Udy behind
the wheel was beautiful, red
haired Grace Davison of a
well known East Rockaway
family. The films were taken
on Main Street, East Rock-away
and some bathing
scenes were taken at Long
Beach. The studio was in a
large, white house (still
standing) across the Pearl
Street Bridge on Rockaway
Avenue, in Oceanside.
Another performer in the
troups, and still living on
Baisley Avenue, is Clinton
Donnelly. His father was at
one time Mayor of the Vil-
Nassau County in the New
York iState Senate by former
assemblyman Dean Skelos,
who lost his bid 2 years ago.
Mr. Skelos was helped by
the coattails of President
Reagan, as the Republican
support given him by the
Executive Committeemen,
Alan McGarry in Baldwin,
Martin Bernstein in Ocean-side,
and Phil Christ in t a st
Rockaway. These areas
we're vital to secure a victory
lor Mr. Skelos, as they pro-duced
the vote for him. The
other big winners we're con-gressman
Norman Lent.

STATE OF THE VILLAGE. Newly elected State Senator
Dean G. Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) recently received a
briefing on the "State of the Village" from East Rockaway
Village Trustee Anthony Santino. Santino (right) lobbied

Rockaway, when the new session of the state legislature
