Maiden To Leave District
WALK-THKOUGH. On Saturday, October 27, the
members of the East Rockaway Republican Committee and
their supporters assembled at the home of Executive Leader
Phil Christ to prepare for their annual ''Walk-through" of
East Rockaway. The committee members distributed litera-ture
for their candidates for election throughout East
Rockaway.
East Rockaway School
Superintendent Michael
Maiden has decided that he will leave the East
Rockaway School District
when his contract expires on
June 30, 1985. His intention
not to renew his contract
was disclosed at the Board
ol Education meeting held
on Monday, October 22.
Superintendent Maiden
t h a n k e d students and
teachers lor their support
during his three year term in
East Rockaway. Maiden
gave no explicit reason lor
his decision to leave.
Mr. Maiden became an
object of controversy since
the East Rockaway Board ol
Seagull Classic Run
The Seagull Classic 5K
(.3.1 mile) Run was held on
Sunday, October 14 and it
entered the history books as
a great success. Over 500
runners crossed the finish
line at Bay Park on this cool,
overcast and windy day.
Hundreds of Lynbrook and
East Rockaway residents
participated.
A big crowd witnessed a
very exciting men's finish as
Michael Petsky of Elmira,
N. Y . with a time of 15:50,
edged East Rockaway's Bill
Lunny by 5 seconds. Tom
Weber, a Virginia resident,
trailed by only 9 seconds.
The top women's finisher
was Jill Fixler (18:54). She
was trailed by Dianna
DeVoe (21:05) and Lyn-brook's
Ellen Weber (21:27).
The top East Rockaway
residents were Bill Lunny
and 11 year old Mauri
Murphy (22^5) who took
the women's prize.
Garnering the honors for
l . y n b r o o k were Kevin
Mutell (18:09) and Ellen
Weber.
The top three team fin-ishers
were: N Y N E X "A,"
N Y T E X "B" and the Grant
Avenue Turtles.
The top finishers in each
age group are listed below.
Special Recognition to
Rev. Jay Madasci of St.
Raymond's who finished
42nd overall in a time of
19:36. For his strong show-ing,
Fr. Jay has earned the
title of "East Rockaway's.
Fastest Priest."
The St. Raymond's 75th

E d u c a t i o n proposed in
October, 1983 a plan to
demolish both Rhame and
Centre Avenue Schools and
construct new ones in their
p l a c e . This plan was
overwhelmingly rejected in
December of last year.
More recently, a petition
bearing over 650 signatures
calling for Superintendent
M a i d e n ' s r e m o v a l was
presented to the Board.
Those signing the petition
blamed Mr. Maiden for
" i n c q m p e t a n c e " when
bookkeeping and administra-tive
errors resulted in a $3.68'
per hundred increase in
school taxes this year.
making East Rockaway the
highest taxed district in
Nassau County.

Board of Education is
c u r r e n t l y looking for a
replacement to succeed
S u p e r i n t e n d e n t M a i d en
when he leaves the District
next June.
Lynbrook Elks Hosts Fire Night
Lynbrook Elks Lodge
No. 1515 held its annual fire
awards night on Thursday
e v e n i n g , O c t o b e r 18.
Honored that evening were
firemen from the communi-ties
of East Rockaway,
Rockville Centre, Malverne,
W o o d m e r e , L y n b r o o k,
Oceanside and Lakeview.
Past E x a l t e d Ruler
Anthony J. K'jnny was
chairman, and Ex-Chief
Michael Piz/ino of the East
Rockaway Fire Department
served as the Master of
Ceremonies. Exalted Ruler
Joseph Caggiano expressed
words of welcome on behalf
of the Lodge and Lynbrook
Mayor William P. Geier
spoke briefly, proud of the
Elks for honoring our
volunteer firemen.
"Volunteerism is one of
the most important facets of
our American way of life,"
t h e M a y o r said. He
explained how he recently
personally experienced the
expert care of the Lynbrook
Emergency Service Unit.
Frank Nasgrow, Deputy
Chief of the New York City
Fire Department, a twenty-t
w o year resident of
Lynbrook, was the guest
speaker for the evening. The
M a n h a t t a n - b a s e d depart-ment
chief welcomed this
opportunity to exchange
ideas with the members of
the volunteer departments.
A dinner for approx-i
m a t e l y two hundred
f i r e m e n and Elks was
cooked and served by the
women's a u x i l i a r y , the
Lynbrook Doe Club.
Awards were presented
for both longevity of service
and specific heroic deeds.
Among other dignitaries
present were Malverne
Trustee Joseph Canzoneri,
representing Mayor Stewart
Morrow; Rockville Centre
Mayor Donald B Browne;
and East Rockaway Mayor
Theodore S. Reinhard.

there will be 3 candidates on
the ballot who reside in East
Rockaway. Norman Lent,
of Plymouth Road, is seek-ing
his 8th term in the House
of R e p r e s e n t a t i v e s in
Washington, D.C. Ray Har-rington
of Grant Avenue is
seeking election to the
County Court, and Brian
Meyer of James Street is
running for the New York
State Assembly from the
20th District.
All information shows
that East Rockaway is the
only community in Nassau
County to be honored by
three candidates in one year.
