VOL. XVI, NO. 14 EAST ROCKAWAY. NEW YORK 11518, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1983 PER COPY
On Friday, February 4th, the children of St. Raymond's School
participated in a spectacular balloon launch as the culmination of
Catholic School Week. Kay Mrrary of the Parents Activity Club was
in charge, and she and her helpers did a tremendous job in inflating
the hundreds of ballons prior to the launch. The children placed
message cards in the balloons and hopefully many will be returned.
Pictured above. Presiding Supervisor Thomas Gulotta arrived to
participate and is shown prior to the launching with St. Raymond
Principal Sister Nancy and members of the PAC Kay Murray and
Joan Martin, along with some children anxious to let the ballons

Vfae Board tar The Lynbrook Village Board held its regular meeting on Monday,
Feb. 7th. Highlighting the meeting was the making of two appoint-ments
by the Mayor, and Board. Mr. Luis Bejarano, long-time Lyn-brook
resident, vvas appointed to the Library Board. Mr. Bejarano
served the Village in'the same capacity for many years, earlier in
his illustrious career, which includes credits too numerous to
mention here. Also appointed was Anthony Zarba, present manager
of the Nathan Hale Senior Housing Complex, to be the Board Liai-son
for Senior Citizen Housing Studises. Mr. Zarba will remain in
his present capacity but will now also look into finances, matters
concerning the State Housing Authority and HUD, all with an eye
toward expanding Senior Citizen Housing in Lynbrook.
(See photos below.)
A representative of Big Brothers/Sisters of Nassau County was on
hand discussing the organization's programs and especially the
"Battle of the Villages" on Feb. 20th. Mayor Glenn Spielman urged
anyone who could help the organization by volunteering, to do so.
A new fire truck committee was appointed to look into replacing
the Rescue Squad's 1970 GMC Van, which is becoming non-func-tional
and increasingly difficult to get supplies to repair. In connec-tion
with fire department repairs. Truck No. 423 (Tally-Ho), a 7-
year old Seagrave is now at that company's plant in Elmira for re-pairs.
Valley Stream has loaned the LFD a truck to replace the one
out for repairs.
Parking regulations around Rockville Cemetery, specifically on
the north side of Merrick Road, were discussed and Police Chief
Frank Kehr reported that it was his opinion that the regulations
(change to No Parking) should not be changed. The parking is due
to an overflow from Hot Skates and if they cannot park on Merrick
Road they will just go to a nearby residential street, Charles, etc.
He suggested that the Cemetery (which is not in the Village of Lyn-brook)
hire a security guard or erect a higher fence on Merrick Road
to reduce vandalism.
The Lynbrook/East Rockaway Lions Club advised of a Health
Fair to be held Feb. 23rd at the Elks Club (previsouly reported in
this paper); Adams-Russel presented a Cable TV update, noting that
the institutional turnon was on scheduled for the end of February;
the Tax Lien Sale was set for April 12th, after proper publication
and notification; March 7th was set for public hearings on the use
of Revenue Sharing funds and amending the Plumbing Code.
A Public Hearing on a request for a Special Exception by Hub
Truck Rental was held as a part of this meeting. Hub desires to en-larte
its present building in the rear, thus eliminating on-site park-ing
below the minimum prescribed by law. Hub, operating at 170
Merrick Road, for over 25 years, said they needed the enlarged
building for repair work and noted that they also owned a nearby
parcel which is used for parking. No resident spoke in opposition
to the request and the Board reserved decision.
Next meeting Feb. 15th at 4 p.m. as part of Grievance Day
activities (replaces Feb. 2 1st meeting).
