S t a n d a r d s E n g i n e e r i ng
Society at its 32nd annual
meeting, held this year at
S t o u f f e r s ' Dayton Plaza
Hotel, Dayton, OH.
Mr. Berg was honored by
the Society for his numerous
c o n t r i b u t i o n s made over
many years to the develop-ment
of standardized preci-sion
instrument components
- drives, small gears, shafts,
bearing supports, couplings
and related components, as
well as the development of a
new class of precisions drive
chains and belts. His basic
component designs, dimen-sions,
tolerances and quality
standards are the criterion
followed t h r o u g h o u t the
precision instrument indus-try.
His own company was
formed in 1968 and struc-tured
around the concept of
standardized mass produc-tion
of these components to
precision standards.
A graduate of Pratt Insti-tute
in Mechanical Engi-neering
and former Instruc-tor
of Mechanical Design at
Polytechnic Institute, the
span of Mr. Berg's engineer-ing
career includes positions
as Design Engineer for Ford
Instrument Co. and Fair-child
Camera, Divisional
Manager for Servo Mecha-nisms,
Chief Engineer for
Perkin Elmer, and President
of PIC Design Corp., which
he founded in 1954.
His name appears in the
Congressional Record as a

On September 21, the
East Rockaway Board of
Education held a special
meeting to select a technical
Advisory Committee who
will provide input to the
Board regarding its upcom-ing
school renovation project.
The Committee, chaired by
a r c h i t e c t James Groak,
toured the district's three
schools to determine for
themselves the best way to
approach the renovation.
Other members of the
Committee include: Ed Tay-lor,
John Woods, Ralph
Brande, Werner Aue, Tom
C a r n e y , Bruce Temple,
Richard Szika, Ed Freed-man,
Jim Rooney, Stuart
Bromberg, Martha Yos-wein,
Eileen Mansfield,
C o r a D o h e r t y , Hank
Nathanson, Peggy Mother-way,
Jane Brezenoff and
Marion Cooney.
Last spring, the Board
commissioned the firm of
Fred H. Thomas Associates,
architects and engineers, to
study the over-all problem
and present a report by the
beginning of this school
year. The firm suggested
several options including

and the Centre Avenue. Ele-mentary

S c h o o l . The conclusions
reached by the architects
were that the 60-year-old
e l e m e n t a r y schools are
unsafe and will require an
enormous amount of work
to bring them up to accepta-ble
safety standards.
According to Rose Marie
Brande, Board President,
"This Board of Education is
' deeply committed to making
our schools safe for the stu-dents,
and we are asking the
technical advisory commit-tee
for their advice on the
best way to achieve that
goal."
The Board is planning to
hold several meetings to
obtain input f r om all inter-ested
citizens. A community
wide open forum will be held
before the proposition vote.
