Learning "Erupts" at
John H. West Elementary School
Several John H. West Elementary School fifth graders are pictured here with
their enrichment teacher, Jenny Seaman, and Principal Carol Muscarella,
proudly displaying one of the model volcanoes they created. Photos provided
by Jennifer Kuefner, Syntax.
During their science lessons and enrichment classes for the past four
weeks, John H. West Elementary School fifth-grade students have been learn-ing
about the earth's movement and the forces that could create destruction
throughout the world.
With the help of their teachers, the students quickly became experts
on such topics as Pangaea, earthquakes, volcanoes, and the Ring of Fire.
Working in small groups, the students deeply explored these topics and creat-ed
short presentations on their research, which they delivered before the class
and an audience of parents. At the conclusion of their presentations, the stu-dents
eagerly demonstrated a volcanic eruption on a much smaller scale.
Using the model volcanoes they created and a combination of baking soda
and vinegar, the students made "lava" flow.
