Bethpage 9u travel baseball team
BBAI Boy's Minor League Champions
The A's, led by coaches Rich Gennaro, John Riggins and Ron Paola, won the
Boy's Minor League Championship for BBAI. They were easily the best team all
year compiling a mark of 15-1 and winning the championship game by the score
of 14-1 over the Cardinals. It was a total team effort. 1st row left to right: Tyler
LaGois, Mike Donovan, Logan Paola, Pee Vac Kovac, Thomas Giocomello, Joe
Foley and John Riggins. 2nd row left to right: Andrew Testani, Taleed Shariff,

The Bethpage 9u travel baseball team won the
Independence Open Tournament in Bethpage with a 13-0
victory over previously unbeaten East Meadow Gold.
Bethpage went 5-0 in the tournament outscoring opponents
60-15. The entire 13 player roster contributed to the victo-ry,
which included 10 3rd graders in a predominantly 4th
grade division. It was the 1st time in the four year history
of the tournament that a Bethpage based team was able to
capture the championship.
Bethpage opened the tournament with a 10-1 victory
over Howard Beach/Queens Village. Cameron Leary was
dominant on the mound striking out 8 in 5 1/3 innings.
Leary drove in 3 runs at the plate with two hits including a
long home run to dead centerfield. Alex Purchick had 2
hits, 2 runs scored and drove in 2 and Nicholas Griffin
scored two runs.
The second game saw a 12-0 beating of East Meadow
Blue. Purchick hurled the 4 inning shut out with Dominic
Zizzo contributing 2 hits and 4 RBIs. Matt Fantry had 2 hits
and 3 RBIs and Mateo Dovas scored 2 runs and had 3
stolen bases. Game 3 was a 15-6 victory over Plainview
Blue with Dovas and Joseph Toner combining for the victo-ry
on the hill. John Riggins had 3 hits, 3 stolen bases and
scored 3 runs from his lead off position. Fantry, Brian
O'Boyle and Patrick Kerrigan all had 2 hits and Purchick
scored 3 runs. Joe Foley made a diving catch in right and
turned it into a double play to secure the Eagles victory.
The tournament semi-final against the Massapequa
based Long Island Braves was easily the Eagles toughest
game. After putting up 3 in the 1st, the Eagles saw the
Braves take an 8-4 lead to the bottom of the fifth. At that
point, the Eagles mounted a stirring rally scoring 6 runs.
Zizzo's 2 run double brought the Eagles within 8-7 then
Kerrigan got the Eagle's biggest hit of the tournament with
a line drive two run double down the leftfield line to give the
Eagles the lead they would never relinquish. O'Boyle was
spectacular on the mound getting the Braves 1-2-3 to end
the game and set off a wild celebration on the mound.
Bethpage took on unbeaten East Meadow in the tourna-ment
final and was ready to play. Purchick hurled a second
consecutive shutout of an East Meadow team. Riggins,
who was the catalyst all weekend, lined a single to lead off
the 1st, stole second and third and scored on a Kevin
Groom sacrifice fly. Zizzo had a 2 run double in the 2nd to
push the lead 3-0. Eddie Clark followed with another dou-ble
to make the lead 4-0. Later in th? frame. Groom broke
the game open with a bases clearing, 3 run triple giving the
Eagles an insurmountable 8-0 lead. The game ended on a
walk off triple by O'Boyle.
Purchick made one out in 5 games hitting .800 with 11
walks and scoring 9 runs. Riggins led the team with 7 hits,
batted .538 with 9 runs scored. Zizzo drove in 11 runs and
Fantry had 6 hits and 7 RBIs. O'Boyle, Leary, Dovas,
Toner and Purchick were great on the mound and the
defense was stellar throughout. A great weekend for the
boys from Bethpage!
