Major Problem Avoided as BFD Responds to Leaking Propane Tank

On June 26 the Bethpage Fire Department responded to a
report of a leaking 20 lb propane tank at the Lowes Home
Improvement store on South Broadway in Hicksville. An alert
Employee smelled propane and found the leaking tank among
the dozens of stored tanks by the garden center and called the
Fire Department.
Arriving units investigated the leaking tank and determined a
"Burn Off' was necessary as Engine Company 5 stretched one
hose line and began dispersing the propane leaking from the
tank . The Hicksville FD Hazardous Materials Unit was special
called to the scene and the tank was burned off without
incident. The Garden Center and North parking lot were closed
for about anhour during the operation. (Photos by Kevin I mm)
