Bethpage High School Talent Show
Raises Funds for Long Island Crisis Center
On Thursday January 13, 2011, Bethpage High School Student
Civic Association hosted a celebrity-judged Talent Show with pro-ceeds
going to Long Island Crisis Center. Students poured in despite
the cold weather with a major donation of $1000. earmarked for
LICC. Celebrity judges included musician/singer/songwriter Patricia
Shih, rock drummer Liberty Devitto (formerly of Billy Joel's band),
teen rock sensation Jesse Kinch, unparalleled LI DJ Rocky from
WB AB and Fran Karliner, Director of Development from Long Island
Crisis Center.
Winners of the Talent Show were Kristen Chiofalo singing an oper-atic
aria, "Deh, Viene Non Tardar" in 3rd place, the rock band Last
Stand, playing "Bring Me to Life" in 2nd place and first place was
none other than Kyle Brown and his stand-up comedy routine, which
we were told actually made "all the judges laugh ". Much apprecia-tion
to all those who attended the talent show, participated in its suc-cess
on all levels and of course the performers and judges which
makes the show a night of enjoyment and giving for and from the
comrpunity from BHS Student Civic Association.

SECOND ANNUAL LONG ISLAND H.S.
ETHICS BOWL COMES TO
BETHPAGE H.S. ON FEBRUARY 12, 2011
Building on the success of 2010's first annual Long Island High
School Ethics Bowl, the second ethics bowl will take place at Bethpage
High School on Saturday, February 12, 2011, and feature teams from ten
area schools.
During the bowl, a unique high-school event, students thoughtfully
confront and analyze arguments for a range of tough ethical dilemmas
facing our society today.
"At a time when school districts around the country are focused on
standardized tests, the ethics bowls encourage a different approach to
improving education, fostering critical thinking and asking students to
actually work through the big questions we all struggle with," says
Roberta IsraelofF, Executive Director of the Squire Family Foundation,
main sponsor of the event.
Many participants recognize the transformative power of the activity.
According to Michael Steinmann, director of the Stevens Institute High
School Ethics Bowl, "The event promotes intellectual, personal, and
social growth. It deepens students' understanding of the complexity of
ethical issues; increases their sense of personal responsibility; and pro-motes
a model of rational, civil discourse." •
Founded in 2007 by leading businessman Gary Squire, the Squire
Family Foundation supports the bowls as part of a broad effort to ensure
that all students in American elementary and secondary schools have an
opportunity to study philosophy.
Say It Isn't SNOW!
With the snow piles finally melting and the pavement beginning to peek
through all the mounds of snow, weather reports seem to indicate that
we may be in fi)r more accumulations by weeks end. Early predictions
indicate that a storm could be hitting our area on Friday, just as the
Tribune is being delivered to your home! Let's hope they are wrong and
the melting trend continues. If not... it's back to the shovels for us all!
