Bethpage School District Proposed Budget:
One of the Lowest Increases in 20 Years
On Tuesday, May 17, residents in the Bethpage School
District will be asked to vote on a proposed budget of
$74,583,334 for the 2011-12 school year, which represents a
2.33% budget-to-budget increase. Despite the overall state of
the economy, rising costs, the loss of $1.2 million in state aid,
and a series of unfunded mandates, including an additional
payment of $1.3 million in required pension costs, the Board
of Education is proposing one of the lowest budget-to-budget
increases in 20 years and one of the lowest budget increases
in Nassau County.
"Our District is always looking to operate as efficiently as
possible without compromising effectiveness. The Board of
Education gave us one overriding directive: to the extent pos-sible,
minimize the impact of any cuts on student instruction,"
said Bethpage Superintendent of Schools Terrence Clark. "In
collaboration with the Citizen's Budget Advisory Committee,
the District has worked to construct a budget that balances
instructional needs with fiscal discipline."
2011-2012 Budget Supports and Preserves:
• Class size policy
• Elementary summer school
• TGIF program for JFK and BHS
• 21st Century Scholars' Program for all schools
• All clubs and extracurriculars for all schools
• Saturday Academic Intervention Services for all three ele-mentary
schools
• K-12 Inclusion Program
• Student transportation mileage policy
• Full Day Kindergarten
• Robotics program
• Artist-in-Residence programs for JFK and BHS
2011-2012 Budget Enhances the Current Instructional
Program:
• SMARTBoards for elementary classrooms
• Staff development efforts in differentiated instruction, tech-nology,
and anti-bullying
• Technology upgrades for all schools
• District Summer School for special needs students
"Thanks to a school community partnership that recognizes
the value of a 21st Century education, our District and stu-dent
achievement have both been recognized on local, state,
regional, and national levels," noted Bethpage Board of
Education President Joel Dauman. "Our Disthct has a reputa-tion
for providing a quality education in academics, the arts,
athletics, character education and community service. We
heard from many community members about how much they
loved our programs and how they make Bethpage such a
special place. We did not want to compromise this, yet we
are fully aware of our fiscal responsibility to the taxpayers.
The Board believes the proposed budget for 2011-12 delivers
a wonderful educational experience for students within the
financial means of the community."
Savings have been achieved in several key areas, most
notably, personnel costs. After carefully assessing needs and
