St. Martin's CYO Grade Boys Basketball
Team Wins Nassau/Suffolk Championship
St. Martin's CYO seventh grade boy's basketball team completed a perfect
season by defeating St. Louis of Sound Beach to capture the CYO
Nassau/Suffolk Ch3mpionship by a score of 53-30. This season the team went
1 5 - 0 including 4 playoff wins to give St. Martin's their first ever Long Island title.
With a tenacious defense led by Brian Seiter, Jake Vera, Michael Carello and
Nick Carlino the team was able to convert the many turnovers Info instant
offense. With point guard Joseph Tierney running the offense, and the outside
shooting of Ben Bock, Sam Einbinder, Anthony Sforza , and the versatile Jack
Dorney, the team was unstoppable.
The championship game got off to a slow start with both teams a little jittery.
Once Dorney hit the first basket 3:19 into the game, the defense started to apply
pressure and St. Martins was off and running. Carlino had a monster game scor-ing
18 points with a lot of those points coming off great assists from Tierney.
Vera, Carello and Carlino dominated the paint grabbing rebounds and blocking
shots. Bock, Einbinder and Sforza complimented the inside game by nailing
shots from the outside. This was a complete team effort as everyone got into the
scoring column and the defense shut down the St. Louis offense for most of the
game. Congratulations to the team on a great season!!

MANETTO H E JEWISH CENTER: TH
LITTLE SYNAGOGUE THAT COULD!
By Linda Mangano
Every now and then there is a story that lights a fire,
sparks the imagination and swells the heart. Well, the
Tribune was lucky enough to stumble onto one if these sto-ries
regarding a "little synagogue that could."
Let me explain. One evening as I was going through my
emails, I came upon a message sent to me from Harvey
Cohen of the Manetto Hill Jewish Center. I assumed it was a
generic press release about an event or program that the
temple was conducting and when I read it...without pausing a
moment..J picked up the phone and called Harvey at his
office. You see what Harvey had explained to me in an email
was overwhelming and I just had to speak to him. When he
began telling me about the journey that the Manetto Hill
Jewish Center had begun, I could tell from the tone of his
voice and the sincerity of his words that this was a true jour-ney
of the heart and soul. Let me explain.
Back in 1974, the Manetto Hill Jewish Center obtained a
Torah whose history dated back 150 years. Its original home
