CELEBRATING PEACE. Freeport's School children performed on Tuesday, October 5, in the district's Second Annual Peace on the Planet concert. The concert was founded by Superintendent Dr. Kishore Kuncham to celebrate peace through the visual and performing arts. This year the event was organized by District Coordinator of the Arts Anne-Marie Hudley Simmons.
The event opened with a Presentation of Colors by the Freeport High School Navy JROTC and the singing of "The Star Spangled Banner" by the high school's Select Chorale. Each of the district's schools presented a special performance, centered around the theme of peace. Some schools sang or gave instrumental interpretations of peace, while others performed skits or delivered dramatic readings on the theme. Over 900 people were in the audience.

Halloween parade and fall festival
Join other Freeporters for a spooky good time at the Halloween Parade and Fall Festival on Saturday, October 24, down on the Nautical Mile.
The event is sponsored by the' Freeport Chamber of Commerce and also includes an all-day chowder contest, and clam-shucking contest. The Freeport Fire Department will also be on hand for its annual safety expo.
Line up for the Halloween Parade for kids (and pets) on Richmond Street by the pier at 11:30 a.m. The parade will begin at noon, followed by crafts, pumpkin-painting, music and bouncers for the kids.
Meanwhile adults can sample chowders up and down the Nautical Mile. Restaurateurs are competing to see who makes the best chowder, so don't forget to cast your vote and try plenty of this hearty fare!
At 3 p.m. the clam shucking contest begins. "Put up your best shucker against the pros," says the chamber's flyer. You get to keep your clams. See if you are as good as any of the Baymen. If so, you just might win a prize. There is an entry fee.
In other news. The Freeport Chamber of Commerce recently honored Al Grover for his service
to the community. At its October 9 luncheon, Mr. Grover regaled the audience with his exploits on the high seas. In 1985 Al Grover made a transatlantic trip on a 26-foot boat powered by two 75-horsepow-er Evinrude outboard motors. The crossing was from Newfoundland to Portugal although the original destination was Ireland. Mr. Grover showed highlights of a DVD made about the trip.
The DVD is selling for $15 and proceeds from the sale will go to the Freeport Chamber of Commerce and the Freeport Historical Society. Call 223-8840 for more information.
