The Freeport Library Board of Trustees and the Village Board of Trustees continue to wrangle over how to address the water problems that threaten to damage the children's wing, the main meeting room and the exhibit area of the main library building. Library Director Dave Qpatow told The Leader tfiat a report issued by architect Lee Sagistano of LAS recommended the roof be replaced. "There are two roofs up there [one on top of the other] including asbestos."
Library board President Darleyne Mayers, in a statement made to the village Board of Trustees, said that water "threatens the books and computers [in the children's room]. In the meeting room, there is an expensive ceiling mounted projector and a valuable piano, both at risk from water damage."
The library has received a $51,500 grant from the Nassau Library System to help defray the estimated cost of $189,000 to replace the roof. The village would be responsible for the remaining $131,000. ;

Deputy Mayor Robert T. Kennedy, taking the lead on this issue on behalf of the village, has declared that the the library roof does not need to be replaced, although some improvements may be necessary. At the January 11 village board meeting. Deputy Mayor Kennedy said that water damage may be caused by leaks in duct work and that consultants hir?d by the library board made test borings in the roof and then did not properly seal them.
On Monday, January 25,, the Freeport Library held a job fair beneath a leaking roof, library officials said.
But a statement from Mayor Hardwick said, "We have never been called to the library when they saw a leak and to date we have not seen a leak. As recent as Monday, January 25, with high winds and heavy rain, we found no leaks in the library roof."
In a letter sent to Mayor Hardwick, library board President Mayers urged him to reconsider funding in the budget for a roof for the library. "We share your vision pf Freeport as a place where people may take pride; however, under your administration, for the first time in over 125 years of proud service, the Freeport Memorial Library appears unkempt and shabby. Is this how you want other communities to view Mrs. Freeport?"
The mayor remains steadfast. "We're here to help when we can, but we must always be mindful of taxpayers' money."
