Freeport trustees hear public comment
by Jim Golding
A lengthy public comment segment of the May 17 Village Board meeting included many issues that have persisted for several months, including lingering fears of a garbage incinerating plant to produce electricity, and the mayor's trips to China and Germany relating to efforts to develop the idea. A dispute with Nassau County Civil Service Commission about the police chief exam, the broadcasting of board proceedings on the local cable channel and other issues were also addressed.
Regarding a lawsuit against the Civil Service Commission, Mayor Andrew Hardwick was questioned by former Village Deputy Attorney Stephen Malone and community activist Pat Rowen about efforts to prevent

administering the exam on March 6, and about whether the entire board had approved the hiring of the law firm that filed the suit.
Village Attorney Howard Colton repeatedly interjected that nothing would be discussed because it was a legal matter. .
Ms. Rowen charged that the mayor had filed the lawsuit to prevent the exam from taking place because he wanted to hire someone from outside of Freeport as police chief.
"He filed the lawsuit behind your back," Ms. Rowen said, addressing the entire board. "He should not have started the lawsuit without the'trustees' input. He's not king of Freeport. Please question him on this."
Mr. Malone asked when the board authorized the hiring of the law firm to bring the suit by the village against

the Nassau Civil Service Commission.
But Village Attorney Howard Colton replied, "We will not discuss the matter."
Mr. Malone said the issue was "not legal matter. It's a financial question, not a litigation question. I'm not going to let you hide behind litigation when I'm discussing finances." He added that, "Whoever authorized that law firm is personally responsible for the bill."
Ms. Rowen asked about a proposed project she had learned of on a website to create a commercial mall and a hotel around train station.
Mayor Andrew Hardwick replied there "were some ideas we've thrown out to consider for raising revenue," but he had no information about the company proposing the improvements, other than agreeing on the conversion of about 400 street lights to induction lights.
